But come on, saying "they suck" and complaining are pretty much the same.

Not really. I stated that they suck because they are usually guys that work pro games and seem to be less in-tune with the college game. That's my opinion. I'm going to watch it regardless. Even with the sound on.

I'm, apparently, one of the few who likes Joe Buck. I like his voice. I tend not to listen much to what the announcers are saying - I find nearly all of them appear not to be watching the game I'm watching - and Buck's voice and delivery are pleasant to me.

Since when does Fox have regular season primetime college football?

Since this year. They basically cut their law enforcement shows, Cops and America's Most Wanted that used to be in the 8pm slot because they want to start competing directly with Disney and NBC for primetime football now. - they also are looking to start a new network to directly compete with ESPN, NBC Sports and CBS Sports above what FSN does.

Which is great for Pac 12 and Big 10 since Fox has a financial stake in those conferences the way ESPN does with the SEC and Texas and thus will likely give them favorable coverage.

I think they are doing 12 primetime games this year, and so far every game Fox has announced for that slot features a Pac 12 or Big Ten team - or both.

Gotta agree with this one - nothing bugs me more than a play-by-play announcer who isn't as excited as the situation warrants. One of the big reasons I'm not the hugest fan of Greg Sharpe either...I've never heard him just totally lose it for a second in sheer euphoria, or get even close really.

What's weird about this is I completely agreed with you before I watched the videos. Then I realized how pissed I would be if I was a MSU fan when Johnson made that call. I always thought I hated Joe Buck, but those two videos kinda made me respect his professionalism, in some weird way.

Who's that? I know Gus Johnson has done the last few B1G conference championship games on FOX, and I prefer him to any announcer on earth.

It just seems like they usually have guys that primarily do pro games (other than Gus) and are a little out of touch with the college game.

You mean like on the third PI call of the game, still saying in lecture the little kid voice "Now remember, they do not get the ball at the end of that long pass, in COLLEGE that pass interference penalty will go for ONLY 15 yards." Or c a r e f u l l y spelling out the difference in OT rules.

He was calling the game the same way for both teams, Wisconsin just happened to make the play of the game and Johnson kind of lost it. That was kind of an extreme example of how Gus acts during games. The Joe Buck example is exactly how Joe is going to call every. Single. Play. No matter the situation. Probably works for baseball, but I just find it annoying as hell during NFL games.

I guess that kind of stuff plus they just haven't watched a lot of the college games, it seems. They are well-versed on the teams/players, offensive styles, etc, like the announcers that only do college games.

I think that's a fair assessment of Buck. He's kind of got one delivery. But most of the time I tune the guys out - they're just background noise. I'm watching the play and making my own assessment. The only times I notice the announcers is when they CLEARLY miss the import of a play, or who should have been flagged, or whose block was missed/made. That happens with pretty much every crew, too. Which is why I mostly tune them all out.

Sure, I understand where you're coming from. I was actually surprised that I took the opinion I did from those videos because, like I said, I've never been a huge Joe Buck fan. (I remember when Randy Moss "mooned" the crowd at Lambeau and Joe was annoyingly mortified.)

At the same time, I've always hated d!(k Vitale. He ruins games for me, because I'm not watching the game for the announcers take or the announcers emotional reaction. I guess I prefer a muted Summerall-type, given the choice. But yeah, you don't want a zombie in the booth, either.

That's really a product of covering bowl games but not the regular season. Now that they are doing some regular season games it should get better. I'd expect well get Gus. I really like him.
