Memorial Stadium will undergo an expansion in club seating before the 2009 season, leaving a financial decision for Husker ticket holders who sit in the West balcony.
Scheduled to begin after this season and be completed by August of next year, the expansion will add club seating to the entire balcony. Certainly a financial boon to the athletic department, NU officials say there’s been significant demand for more club seating.
Sections 121, 122, 130 and 131 had previously not featured club seating, therefore tickets cost less. Now, roughly 1,200 people will have a decision to make.
Fans with tickets in those balcony sections will have the option of keeping their seats by contributing the minimum donation of $1,500 per seat or choose to relocate to other seats in the stadium.
Those who relocate will be required to pay whatever donation fee they are currently giving.
The $1,500 donation price tag attached to the new seats is the same people paid in 1999, when about 1,600 club seats (between the 30-yard lines) were first added to Memorial Stadium’s West balcony.
Back then, approximately 350 ticket holders — many with more than one ticket — were relocated after electing not to pay the annual contribution of $1,500 per seat required to keep their West balcony seat locations.
Club seats come with wider seatbacks, game-day access to West Stadium escalators, numerous concessions, restrooms and an indoor club that shelters fans from bad weather.
Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said the expansion plans were in the works before he was named to his position last October.
