NU's Beck learning on the job

Bob Stoops has had a bunch of first time Coordinators since he has been at OU. Mangino was a 1st time OC, Mike Stoops was a first time DC, Chuck Long first time OC, Brent Venables first time DC, Josh Heupel first time OC.
No offense, but those are bad examples....

Mangino - fired and hasnt found another job. Only had one good season. Overall.... not successful

Stoops - Fired from last job, poor defense and still without a job. Success? Not sure...

Chuck Long - Was a position coach under Hayden Fry and Ferentz... then moved to OU at THE SAME position (qb coach). He was then promoted after several years. Successful? Yep, but I think he had proven himself before he got to OU (was in lead fo Iowa job after Fry left, but Ferentz couldnt say no to the money)

Venables - OU fans calling for his head and trying to run him out or town. Worst defense in Stoops era..... not successful

Hyple - Too soon to tell how successful he will be. This year was a letdown for the amount of talent that offense has. ... no successful.

Top programs have coaches who do not need to learn on the job. NU should not, ever, hire a first time coach at any level. That is what low-level programs w/o a history do... because they must. A program of the stature of NU (a stature that is, clearly, eroding... but still formidable) should, never, ever, ever hire a newbie --- let them cut their teeth elsewhere, prove themselves... and then hire them.

The reason that NU is where it is --- a perennial #4-5 conference team that finishes the season ranked between #20-30 --- rather than being more... much more.. competitive --- is poor hiring of coaches. Go with proven experience... every time --- unless, of course, you cannot command (that is, compete) for such. I do not think NU has fallen so low that they cannot compete for someone experienced and who is a proven commodity --- but perhaps the horizon is that bleak.
and conversely, when you bring in proven coaches you get better recruits......we are doing it on the "cheap" and that sucks if you want to be a big time program!

Yep, those "proven" coaches are a lock. What's wrong with Bo that he can't understand that?

Zook at Florida & Illinois (fired), Weiss at Notre Dame (fired), N. Chow at UCLA (fired), RRod at Michigan (fired), Callahan at NU (fired), etc, etc. We want to be a big time program too!

Tim Beck had a job at KU for 3 years before coming here but he is a first time OC. Carl Pelini had a job at Ohio for a few years before coming here but he was a first time DC.

The point was that NU isn't a place for first time Coordinators, yet OU has had plenty of first time Coordinators. Also those guys going on and being not very good Head Coaches has nothing to do with what they accomplished at OU.

Magino - 2000 OU OC National Championship

Stoops - 1999-2003 OU DC National Championship (2 more BCS bowls including 1 National Championship game)

Venables - 2004 - 2011 OU DC 6 BCS Bowls (including 2 National Championship games)

Long - Not an OC anywhere until he got to OU so basically he hadn't proven himself anymore then Beck had

Heupel - OC in 2010 when OU won the Big 12 and also won a BCS bowl.

Agreed, newearthhusker. We don't need Beck to move on and become a successful head coach somewhere else. We just need him to become a good OC here.

One thing that caught my eye though; winning an Orange Bowl with Kansas isn't successful? I want whatever drugs that guy is smoking.

Oh boy, talk about a monster understatement. Winning the Orange bowl with "Kansas" should be an automatic Hall of fame nomination for their HC. My Gawd, if that's not success truly nothing is.

Is this right? One of the Nebraska papers says only eight FBS schools have won nine games or more in the past four seasons, and Nebraska is one of them.

Six BCS schools.

Luncheon emcee Greg Sharpe Thursday called Bo Pelini’s first four seasons consistent, pointing out the Huskers are one of just six BCS teams that have won at least nine games over the past four seasons. “It’s an elite list and does NOT include Ohio State, Michigan, Texas or Oklahoma,” Sharpe said.
