Observations: offense and defense

Observation: a team that averages 275 yards rushing and 180 yards passing is fun to watch and hard to beat.

A defense that can get the offense back on the field quicker helps, too.

No prediction for this Saturday. All available evidence suggests anything could happen.

Actually I thought that the call on Stafford was bs. He has equal right to the ball, and he was to the spot first and Abbredaris ran into him. Am I right? Am i?

offense is fine when not fumbling we can score 30+ on all teams in big10 imo, field goals=points cept we dont have the great alex henery, defense needs a turnover or like you said some better field position..that is all

I don't think I have shaken my head as many times as I did in the first half against Wisconsin. I hope that the team got that out of their system and does not do a repeat half like that in Columbus. We will get a beat down if we do. Our offense is going to score some points. We have to bottle up Miller just enough is all.

After re-watching the Wisconsin game I noticed a couple things that I thought warranted discussion. The first thing that really stuck out was our offense's ability to sustain drives excluding the first quarter. I believe our first 3 drives were 3 and out or less, but after that, we had lengthy drives. I think this speaks a great deal to how far the offense and Martinez have progressed. Basically, the offense has been doing this consistantly all season. Would be curious to know what our average scoring drive for the season is.

Also begs the question, how good would this offense be if we could get a short field? I know the D stepped it up, but it seems like they really struggle to force turnovers, especially on the opponents side of the 50. Do we not blitz enough or is it just part of the scheme? Also, why do we keep attempting 50+ yard field goals instead of playing field position once in awhile?

Lastly, while the front 7 on the d stepped up, why does our secondary play the ball in the air so poorly? I guess, maybe not the entire secondary but definately Stafford. He seems to always go for the hit instead of playing the ball. It cost us a PI call and possibly an interception in the 3rd quarter, i think. He also batted a ball down that on the replay looked like he could have cought it. Is this coaching or just Staffords style of play?

Love to hear your thoughts.

Side note: I was suprised Ball got up from the hit that Carter put on him in the 3rd quarter, especially given his concussion last week.
Because we have a weapon that can MAKE them............(points over position any time)........

All we have to do is pressure and keep a designated LB to always stay on him. Santos might be the guy, since he is our fastest LB due to Anderson being out for the rest of the season. Fisher, Whaley and Compton are just too slow to play cover IMO. I think we should have Compton blitz most of the time, cause him to run or throw. If he throws under pressure, he is almost sure to get picked or an incomplete ball. He is not good under pressure, which will benefit us, and if our front 4 play like they did, we should have no problem getting to him.

Their defense seems to have an issue with a spread offense, and they have yet to play an offense like ours, which IMO, is the best in the Big 10, and our O-line is up there as well with some minor adjustments. They stopped Bell for the simple fact, that is all MSU has. They don't have a mobile QB or another threatening IB/FB in the backfield to account for, nor do they have to worry about the pass game, as MSU doesn't have a passing game either. We have everything on the offensive end for them to fear. As long as we don't have turnovers, and put our D in a bad position, we will have this game in the bag. 5 guys nonstop rush, 1 LB stay back and contain Miller, with Man on Man in the secondary and Stafford to pick up slack, we will have no problems on defense if tackles are made.

Great second half by this team and coaches no two ways about it. One of the best of the Pelini era in my opinion. The coaches clearly adjusted, the changes were obvious, and they all worked to perfection. Defense and Offense. Sustained drives by the offense. Attacking defense. Offensive line was in control aside from a few holding penalties. I think this game was a huge step forward for this team. We learned that we can overcome our mistakes. This team has struggled in the past once things have gone wrong, and while I prefer that we not try to shoot ourselves in the foot, we showed that we won't quit. We can come back from those mistakes and in my opinion, could play with anyone in the country the way we played that second half.

This felt so much like last year's Ohio State game.

But we didn't really build on what we learned in that game.

Hope this team is different.

Not to mention, if you have a kicker who's leg is strong enough to get it there, and you dont allow him to try a couple time, you start chipping away at his confidence. We dont need that with Maher. We just need to keep sending him out there.

I think continually spending him out there when there is a high probability of failure will ruin his confidence for the 35 yard range field goals. I think send him out if it's early in the game, but I don't like the odds late. Unless there is .01 left and we're down by 3 or less. He's not just missing, even the ones he makes look like crap. I don't know how that one in the 3rd quarter made it except it was divine intervention. Fast forward to Saturday, down by 3, ball on the 33 and its 4th and 3 with a minute and half left. What would you do?

The offense is all about 1st down to me.

We do bad on 1st down (less than 3 yards) and typically the drive ends pretty quick because we get a bit limited by 3rd down.

We do well on first downs and the drive tends to be really good because on 3rd down the Defense has no idea what we're going to do.
