Octavien's comments

Octavien said if the fans dont like they way the D plays, then they should stay home. A fan later called in on the show that aired Oct's comments and said that if Oct wants to refund his $800 per seat donation, he would be happy to stay home!!

Octavien needs to give up his blackshirt, as does the entire DEFENSE!!

While his comments might be warranted, I wonder if he would rather fans not only stay home but also keep their moneys to themselves. Then, maybe he could be lifting coffee cans filled with cement and training in the slums rather than where he is at. The fans are what built Memorial Stadium, the practice facilities, the training rooms, the friggin full ride scholarships, etc. If he's calling out the fans, then maybe we ought to start yanking schollies from underperfoming players.

We friggin booed Scott Frost and Brook Berringer. Octavian isn't even worthy enough to hold their jockstaps. He needs to grow a pair. I guess when things aren't going good it's always a good idea to lash out at someone and try to take the pressure off of one's self. Not only is the D on the verge of a complete meltdown, they're dragging the rest of the team with them. Isn't this kind of what happened in Oakland? The team kind of had a meltdown and started lashing out at everyone?

What were the comments?
Asked about fan criticism of Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove, Octavien said, “We’re not worried about the fans. They can’t play for us. They’re not on the field. We’re the ones putting in the hard work. If they don’t like it, they don’t have to come out and watch the games.”

Comments like that....especially from a coach that is making more than TO did as a head coach of National Championship teams....are ridiculous. They are made in desparation. They are made in defense of himself (which is amazing that he can defend himself as he can't seem to defend anyone else). It sounds like a response from a kid in Junior High. Step up and be a man. Admit that you know you deserve it....though I don't agree with the booing. Admit that you have to step it up. Admit that you aren't performing up to the level that SHOULD BE performed with this staff and consecutive recruiting classes.

Playing the "You don't like it....You can stay home" card is an immediate, knee-jerk reaction made in desparation made from a man that won't accept responsibility and has no real explanation for what is going on. It is made by a man that KNOWS he is at the end of a very short rope.

Octavien made the comment not Cosgrove btw.

Yeah, Cally also mentioned today that they found "different" problems with the NU defense, in reviewing the Ball State tape. As if there weren't enough from the USC game, we now have additional problems to address on defense. Don't worry, though, I'm sure that the coaches will "review the tape" and "correct the errors" with the defense. Thank you, Captian Obvious Callahan!!!!!

Cally wasnt happy bout those comments either, apparently Steve realized that he messed up.

Octavien is going to apolagize!!! I just heard on the Big 12 Conference call hosted by Rivals. He is planning on making it public soon. He was just very emotional coming out of the game and he was defending his team and coaches, and he didn't realize what he said until later. He came to Callahan to discuss the mistake he made.

I would think the problems would be obvious and in order to fix them they need to start with the DL. The DL needs to be more aggressive and get some kind of penetration. They need to keep the opposing OL from shielding off and going after a LB. Suh needs to show that he's the man in the middle and jam everything up. The LB's need to find the friggin ball. When the QB has the ball and drops back, they need to drop back in zone coverage unless they're playing the TE man. If the ball is handed off or the QB runs the draw, they need to haul a$$ to the ball. Once the ball crosses the LOS, it's gotta be a run. Haul a$$ and swarm. The DB's need to stick with their receiver like flies on sh#t. DEFENSE: swarm to the ball no matter who's got it. Conquer and destroy. The DL need to get down and fly off the ball once the center moves it. They need to stay low and not allow the OL to get underneath.

Well, just as I thought.. Octavien was over-emotional and regretted what he said. Maybe after review he'll use it as motivation and follow Bowman's lead of giving up his blackshirt. Although, Octo and Bowman and Grixby are probably the only ones deserving of their blackshirts right now. But, I'd like to see a few guys.. Octo, Bowman, maybe Potter band together and try and reinvigorate our defense.

Sure, "different problems" in that we gave up all the yardage through the air this week instead of on the ground. But, the problem is still the same: The Defensive Line. Against USC they got blocked into next week on running plays and against Ball State they put zero pressure on Davis. The few times one of our D linemen did beat his man, Davis was easily able to escape the pocket and make a play. All the time Davis had to throw+NU man coverage+we were without Bowman=defensive disaster.

A lot of criticism is raining down on the LBs, and while I agree they aren't living up to what we all hoped, better defensive line play would vastly improve our overall defense. I take some hope in the fact that our DLs are all new starters and that most of them appear to have some raw talent (Suh obviously, but Turner and Potter have shown flashes of athleticism)...hopefully as the season goes on they'll improve....they can't play much worse...
