Anyone want to defend our offensive tackles or their passblocking now?

Like I said earlier in the thread, Garrison's tackles have a long way to go.

Um.Cotton and Garrison don't use the old inside/outside method of Milt and Dan.

As far as I have known, Cotton is in charge of the upperclass scholarship linemen during drills and works with the entire two deep when the offense is together in practice while handleing the game prep and gameday calls. Garrison handles the walkons and helps with the scholarship players that have been in the program 2 years or less during drills and also works with the TE's along with Morrow during blocking drills.

Over the last several seasons and going into this one, there have been lots of negative remarks about our offensive line. I would like to say that there obviously has been magnificent improvement. IMO they get better each week.

The pass protection is very good. Can we keep the defense out of the backfield every play? Of course not. On the other hand Taylor is not running for his life on every play either.

The run blocking has become very very good. 5th in the nation in rushing. Heck, we almost have two 100 yd rushers every week.

I'm not sure if this improvement is on BC or his cast of helpers, but I have to admit, there is big time improvement all across the line.

Hats off to the offensive line and coaches!

What team are you watching? The right side of the OL just plane STINKS and Quale couldm't block my grandmother. We are 5th in the nation in rushing due to our I-Backs and a bunch of long plays against inferior opponents. Cotton has to go and hopefully with a new AD who has no emotional ties to a former player we can be rid of this guy and his accomplice the S & C coach. I'm just really tired of seeing O-linemen standing around after Taylor or one of the backs gets taken down for a loss, a short gain or a give away. My hat will be off when BC is on a bus out of town.

I don't care how improved the o-line has been so far this season compared to seasons past... Barney is still just an average O-line coach who doesn't have the ability to coach up players, taking them from average or good to very good or all-americans! Tenopir could and did year after year. Not coincidence! Nebraska's support, facilities, etc. haven't degressed or gone backwards, but rather the opposite. So, this tells me it's on the coaching staff and on them alone! If our guys can't play 4 quarters of sound, disciplined football, and follow through till the very end, then that is solely on the coaches! It's not like our players are not talented. Are they the most talented in the nation? No! Do they need to be in order to win big games like last nights? Hell no! Play smart, mistake free football on both sides of the ball and the game ends up different!

Bo's coaching skill-set as well as the assisstant coaches, are missing something vital to the achievment of success on the field! What exactly is missing I don't know? Heck Bo couldn't even tell you what it is.He was clueless and had no answer for it! Scary!

Hey Bo! Here's a tip on where to start! Stop coddling your assisstant coaches and their poor coaching and fire those who need to be! Cotton! If his kids leave because of it... I say good riddance! Hire an actual full time QB coach again who will devote all of his time to the positions players! Like Turner Gill use to do! Also, don't be too stubborn or proud to exclude the Defensive coaches either! Your time to right this ship is becoming shorter and shorter and as a fan, i'm past being disappointed! I'm downright furious at the constant lame, vague and piss poor excuses you offer up after every loss! If you cant fix these after almost 1 1/2 seasons of bad D play, then you have no clue and arent the man everybody thought you were!

Fact is, im fed up with this embarrassing BS. You earn $3 fricken million dollars a year and us fans arent getting $100,000 worth out of your a$$! Fix it now or take the train out of town back to Ohio!

Garrison's main focus is on the tackles and tight ends, Cotton is center and guards. Pelini talked about it when Garrison was hired. But things might have changed since then.

Cotton only handles the drills now, Beck took over game prep and game day calls as they knew that Barney is heading for a made up position in the AD after the season is over and you can't fire a coach two weeks before or during the season unless you are Wisky. But NU wouldn't do that to an "Nebraska guy" and embarrase him like that.

So what is actually the truth to how the offensive line is handled? Does it change depending on who performs well so we can always blame Barney?

Yes, but he said pretty much the same thing as Blackshirts did recently, specifically mentioning the walk-ons. So, something must have changed.

I don't know how you can put O'Hanlon completely off the hook for that. You guys are weird, apparently mentioning him gets some people pissed off beyond all belief. I wasn't trying to start a riot, just saying that he blew coverage. And he wasn't the only one that blew it on that play; there was likely miscommunication, etc. The real moral of that game is that being that terrible on offense will catch up to you.

O'Hanlon fell for a play fake when we knew they couldn't run, that play was all on Matt. But the loss is on Bo for not going for it on 4th and 1 at VT's 40 when a 1st down seals the game and when Helu had more yards rushing than VT had as a team at that point. We only netted about 20-25 yards on the punt and when a drive for 60 yards vs 80 isn't that much of a difference with time running out and VT needing a TD while doing nothing all day on offense.

I find it hilarious that the majority of a thread names "offensive line" is about a defensive back in a game that took place over 3 years ago. It is epic, vintage message board chitter chatter, and I love it.

There's a big difference in the blocking schemes Nebraska had with the old power I and option formations that was run from the 70s to the end of the Solich era...You really cannot compare Tenopir's OLs with Cotton's OL in scheme or type of player needed.

Back in the 80's and 90s, pass blocking was not a really huge issue and most of the passing yards were generated from the play action anyways. Nebraska didnt have to recruit 6-7 300lb kids like everyone else to man the outside positions. They essentially had about 4 offensive guards and a center. I always thought that was one of the reasons Nebraska was so competitive offensively..due to the simplicity of the schemes and doing a few things so well as opposed to having to recruit players for the pro-style scheme. Very few teams can do that and win consistently.

Nebraska could load up on RBs and OL players that could fit their scheme and win with defense too.

What I stated has been my understanding for quite a while and was confirmed by coach Kaz himself a few weeks ago when asked.

I've heard nothing about Beck taking over any part of the line. There have been rumors about such things in past years and have never proven to be accurate as far as I have been aware.

We wouldn't score 38 points if our oline sucked.

Once again, our oline didnt lose this game. Our defensive players and defensive coaches lost this game for us. Our defense is horrible. Period.

You can blame whomever you want, but it come down to the defense, in both of our losses.

I still think it mostly comes down to turnovers. Not only the offense committing them, but the defense not being able to create them.

If we're even in turnovers against UCLA and OSU, we likely win both games.
