Look at the TV ratings.  B1G dominates.  SEC is self proclaimed and back by eSECpn.  The whole thing is marketing.  OSU and Michigan is usually the most watched game of the year outside of the National Championship game.  The thing with the B1G is that you also have to have more that a pulse to get into B1G schools.  SEC, just be able to spell your name.  Yes, I do know there are some exceptions.
