Ohio State officially interviewed Pelini for job

Kelly was at Oregon for two years before being named head coach. Before that he was the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire.

Gundy was the OC at OK St. for four years before being named head coach. Before that, he was at Maryland. And before that, he was an assistant for 6 years at... Oklahoma State, his alma mater.

Petersen was the OC at Boise St. for five years before being named head coach. Before that, he was at Oregon.

Pelini was a DC for five years before being named head coach. He worked for Bob Stoops when they won the Big XII and played for the national title. He worked for Les Miles, winning an SEC title and a National Title. Before coming to Nebraska for the first time he worked in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl while on the 49ers staff, and also worked for Pete Carroll. Probably didn't learn anything from all those coaches.

First, when you're the new guy, it's best not to be a jerk.

Second, every one of those guys was named HC at the school they were already at. They were also groomed by a HC, who then retired, or left for another job, and didn't have to hire a whole new staff from scratch.

I was just pointing out that a coordinator getting hired at another school as a HC, and being immediately successful, isn't as common as one may think. No need for the attitude.

Actually a head coach in these days is more of a manager, CEO type individual than past head coaches. He has to manage everything, everyone and win on top of that. Bo was not prepared, and in honesty still is not a good head coach. Being totally fair to Bo, it is not his fault things have gone the way they have. A lot to learn and no time to learn it and do a good job of coaching the team. If Tom was not here, I honestly feel he would have failed very quickly, and I think anyone in that same position would to.

I still do not believe Bo has been offered any jobs. I do not believe the Miami deal other than a ploy to get back at the university president and to get a little extra pay. I am not impressed with that, but it is in the past.

I agree, if Bo is given the time he will learn to do the job, but On the job training at this level is tough.

I really could care less about CCG or NCG, I just want a team that is ready to play every single game, beat who we are supposed to and play the better ones tough. I think he is going to get there.

As much as we want to think he is a hot prospect he is not, he is at a past dynasty, trying to get back to being relivant. He has not won anything of importance, and none of the top programs would take him away is my guess. That is not down on Bo. It is facts that the Trustees look at when spending the type of money they pay college football coaches.

If we wouldn't have kicked the last kickoff out of bounds against Texas two years ago or turned it over four times against Oklahoma last year - giving us two conference titles and two BCS bowl games - I don't think we're having this conversation today. Yes, I know, ifs and buts. But that's how close we were to two very good seasons only two years removed from 5-7. And, while the coaches are ultimately responsible, how can you blame a coach when you touchback specialist suddenly shanks one out of bounds or your future NFL running back fumbles deep in your own territory. You don't get points for almost but we came a lot farther in three years than people want to give Bo credit for. The defense took a step back this year (OK, maybe a couple) but we're not at a place where we can sustain the loss of about 8 NFL draft picks over the last couple years and two of our stars this year split the season being injured.

There aren't many guys who win a National Title in their first four years. Stoops did but is now on a 10 year drought (though he's been close). Miles and Saban have it rolling right now but weren't heard from when Nebraska was rolling in the mid-90s. How have Florida and Texas been following their recent National Titles? Heard from Florida St., Miami or Notre Dame recently?

It's tough to get to the top and tough to stay there. Even for places that have a lot easier time filling a roster than you do in Lincoln, NE, despite what we'd all like to think. Pelini came on board following the worst four years Nebraska had since a decade before he was born. In my book, he gets some more time to get us all the way back.

I am slightly troubled that Bo Pelini never seems to be enjoying himself.

Even after wins he likes to keep that chip on his shoulder.

Sorry. I was going for sarcasm but it wasn't intended to be an insult to you or anyone in particular.

I just found it ironic that one poster said we have to have an experienced head coach while another thinks being a successful OC in D-1AA means they show promise. Quite a disparity.

Also, I think there are several ways to be "groomed." I agree that ideally you like the consistancy of having the same staff for a long time. Worked great for the Huskers back in the day but I'm not sure we'll see that a lot any more. Most guys aren't going to wait around for 20 years for the top spot at the school. Look how the head-coach-in-waiting has worked out at Florida St., West Virginia and Texas.

Sometimes it takes people a few stops before they find the right fit but they learn along the way. Pete Carroll didn't come up through the ranks at USC and was fired twice in the NFL. Bill Belichick was a failure as Cleveland's head coach. Les Miles, Nick Saban, Bobby Petrino and Mack Brown have come in from outside the program and gotten things going (though they were head coaches at previous stops).

Everyone's got to start somewhere and there's a lot of ways to get to the top. A lot of people laughed when Auburn hired a coach who was 5-19 in two years at Iowa St. Gene Chizik looks like a pretty good hire now.

Bo isn't going anywhere. These are nothing more than rumors started by people that have nothing better to do. First of all, Bo has not proven that he can bring Nebraska back to prominence - so I highly doubt that any other school, especially big name schools, would be interested in this "experiment" at their school. IF he was interviewed by Ohio State, it was probably extended through nothing more than as a courtesy to him as an alumni. I don't think they would be seriously thinking of offering him the job when he hasn't done anything at Nebraska as a head coach yet.

 
It is all very possible with the amout of lying Bo does...... he could have told TO he wasnt looking, then TO hears about him ineterviewing and calls him on it. I think that is a very likely scenerio. We know Bo asked in the past, but TO gave him a raise after the last one to stop him from looking again (after Miami). Now he is looking again.... and TO is ticked off. Why give him the raise last year if he is ready to jump ship already?

I am sure Da Skers knows more than me, but as the saying goes, if the shoe fits....

Amazing how "experts" float inside information based on second hand heresay. I know for a fact Ohio State interviewed nobody for the job, not even an official interview with Urban Meyer. He was hired thru back channels involving boosters and certain ex players turned announcers. Pelini or a minority candidate were never interviewed.
