DISCLAIMER

It is indisputable that the team was not mentally prepared for McNeese State, and Ameer made that clear in his post game comments. This ultimately is on Bo for not recognizing it, because his public comments prior to the game sure made it sound like the team was dialed in. That lack of focus WILL bite the team in the butt against a better foe.

PLEASE

Don't use this as a vehicle to ad nauseum restate your dislike for Bo, the staff or the direction you think the team is going. At this point no one is going to offer up a pithy insight that hasn't already been flogged to death.

CONSIDER

Three plays. THREE_PLAYS.

  1. Cotton's false start. Negates an almost sure TD. 7 point swing.
  2. Cotton's penalty for the leg whip. I thought that was a bogus call. I looked at the play several times and Cotton was twisting in the air as he was falling. At best it was 50/50 but the refs chose to call it so there it is. This killed NU's momentum on that drive.
  3. Tommy's dumb-azz INT that turned into a pick six. 7 point swing.
  4. BONUS PLAY. Cotton being an illegal blocker downfield when Westy makes that spectacular catch falling backwards. ESPN top 10 catch if it stands. Momentum killer. Between Bullet 2 and Bullet 4, call it another 7 point swing.

That's 21 points boys and girls. And any one of those could have broken McNeese's will to play, potentially obviating their sticking around in the fourth quarter. And NOT ONE of those plays were the fault of scheme. All execution. (At this point some of you, and you know who you are, are ready to point out that Bo and the staff are responsible for execution too. Please, just don't. It's not that it's untrue; rather it's been laid out so many times that, well, you are really making yourself look stupid by pointing something virtually everyone else knows.)

14 point swing arguably in the bag and I would contend that 21 points were likely. What does that make the score?

That's all I wanted to point out. The game was closer than it should have been and I am sick and tired of last minute miracles, just like you are. Nor am I positing that there are not systemic issues that have to be fixed.

However, looking at that game if anyone wants to argue that a 21 point swing does not make the outcome of the game look entirely different, well.....

If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts, wouldn't it be a Merry Christmas? -- Don Meredith.

Also: that was a classic leg whip by Cotton. Not at all a bogus call.

I think we have very little to worry about. Hoping (praying) for 9-4.
Easy peasy. Remember the rest of the Big10 is horrible too.
Which pretty much proves that 9-4 is a ridiculous benchmark.
Someone else posted a fire Hoke thread (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/fire-hoke?page=2), and a big complaint is about Michigan losing at least 4 games every year.
Big time LOL.

Disagree on the call but whatever. Silly me, and here I thought one of the purposes of the board was to offer up speculation.

Also, an undefeated team from one of the power 5 would make the playoffs, because I doubt there will be 4 undefeated teams left at the end of the season.
Agree, but I think there a zero chance NU goes undefeated.
It's only a zero chance when you lose a game, but you could say the same of Iowa and Illinois.
Yeah, "zero chance NU goes undefeated" is mathematically incorrect at this point.

Does anyone have a link to Ameers post game comments please? Also if anyone has a good link of Beck and Papuchis comments to share here. I heard a bit of it from Beck and Papuchis and man, if those guys don't just sound pathetic sometimes.

That sadness spills over to the team. Consider,

“We just started playing flat,” senior guard Mike Moudy said. “A lot of guys went kinda inward, just kinda shut down and went into the cave and shut down. The thing is, you gotta understand, it’s resilience under negative circumstances that we really, really need to work on.

“Something goes negative, people are yelling at you, you’ve got to take that play and remove it. That’s the thing I’ve learned in five years here. You cannot let a bad play carry over into the next one. Because it’s a snowball and it’ll just keep rolling and you can’t stop it. We’ve got a lot of young guys, a lotta guys who need to work on their maturity and with maturity comes letting that play go.”
I mean that is just ridiculously sad. Week two, year seven.

It truly is. The mentality of this team is so fragile it's ridiculous. They resemble their coaching staff. Just listen to these coaches after the game. They sound like their dagnabit dog was just run over.

Which is why the mantra of "be positive, emphasize the good" is just crazy. These delicate flowers, from the staff down actually need to thicken their skin. It's a wonder they don't forfeit when someone stands up to them.

I'm just trying not to panic at this point Polo because I believe in the talent on this team. Across the board, this team has the guys at every spot to be able to win each and every game purely evaluating talent. It's the way the talent is being coached, utilized, and sadly mismanaged year after year thst truly makes me question if we will ever be great again. This coaching staff is an issue at this point for me. I'm not abandoning ship, but damn.....McNeese St.? Gimme a break.
