One major step to fix the offense or..............

at least get it moving in a somewhhat positive direction.

The first time we have 3rd and long and we are at our 35 or better call a timeout.

Call the entire offense over

get in the OLine arse and tell them this one play they have to protect.

call a play that involves deep routes only

take the QB aside and tell him that no matter what, this one play, do not DO NOT check down. Tell the QB that the ball has to go deep. It is OK if the throw is picked. just force him to throw the ball downfield. It is fine to throw a pick and if it does get picked that the QB won't get benched.

I think this would be a major step to shaking the cobwebbs out of the QB's heads and putting a little confidence into them.

This only works if Lee is the QB in my plan.

I know this is stupid and all but i actually think this would work.

 
Yeah, I've been harping for WEEKS that we need to stretch the field 'just because'...

Basically what you're saying is even if it gets intercepted, it is no different than a punt. So just stretch the field and try and make something happen?

 
What is annoying is that, most of the time, one call builds on the success of another call. Short completions should open up the vertical game. We never run double moves....first a comeback route, then a stutter-go...etc.

You obviously know more about offensive football and our football team than anybody else the University could have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to, who also study this team and it is their job to fix the offense. Right now it's Watson. If we really wanted, Bo could go out and find another top-notch guy to do the same job.

Think it'll be you? I don't. So don't act like you know everything and these coaches are idiots compared to you.

 
We aren't stretching the field because neither of our quarterbacks are seeing the field correctly. There are constant checkdowns, the line doesn't block, receivers don't get open, or somebody gets happy feet and runs with it before they should. Saying we need to "stretch the field" is a lot easier said than done, and there is no quick fix solution to why we cannot pick up first downs.

The problem with your idea, OP, is that if the play doesn't work you just wasted a time out. And I'm not sure why you would tell the quarterback to force a throw and if he throws an interception, it's OK. Yeah, it forces him to throw down field and attack different parts of the field, but it just seems rather ridiculous to call a timeout just for one play at a point in the game where getting that first down may not be that important. I mean, are you really going to call a time out early in the first quarter on 3rd down if you don't have to?

We all have issues with how this offense is performing, but Lee has taken a couple of shots down field in previous games and even then it didn't look like his confidence got a boost. Even if the line blocked and the receivers got open, it didn't change the feel of the game and it is apparent because on following drives we still didn't produce points.

Enhance i realize all of this and totally agree. I dont agree that it would be wasting a timeout in the first half but i realize that the line can't block and the WR get no separation, and that the WR dont sit when they are supposed to against zones, and that Lee checks down to quickly, and that our O just overall leaves a lot to be desired.

Just putting something out of the norm out there. Satirically speaking, nothing else of real football use has worked

General however, decided that i was an idiot and felt compelled to say it. Maybe he needs to put on his reading glasses and read it again because if he had read it through the first time he might realize that my last line states simply that i know the idea is stupid.

Nowhere in that post does it say that I am an expert or a coach.

What is funny however, is that i heard this silly notion from the mouth of a longtime college coach one in fact that coached here and when he stated it to me we both laughed but he followed it up by saying "sometimes when all conventional methods dont work you just have to try something out of the norm"

Ok guy,

I do not think he was trying to proclaim his amazing play calling ability. He was just suggesting an idea that is a little far-fetched. (at this point we should be willing to try anything) Although what he is saying is simplistic, he has a good point. Maybe if for a drive or two Watson says "hey you know what kid, air it out and make something happen". We would be better off. Because our offense is pathetic. You can talk about past all you want. Even if it was just a year ago. The condition the Nebraska offense is in is unacceptable. Yea we are 77th in scoring offense, which sadly most people like YOU try to point out as a strong point in your argument. The whole "we are not that bad plee. cause we are better then half the country". We have premier facilities, a pretty good coaching staff and decent hard working players as a whole. So 77th in the nation in scoring offense is not going to cut it. Considering we scored more than half of those points against the Sun-Belt. Anyways its guys like you who piss me off. You are the idiot. You insult anybody who talks about how our offense is terrible. Or when someone makes a suggestion that you do not agree with. He just throwing it out there for thought like " hey what if he did do this"? you think these forums really mean anything? like it is going to affect anything that has to do with what happens on saturday at all? NOPE! its a place for discussion and debate. Not insulting people because your ignorant.

I think Brooks getting injured really hampered the offense. There was an article in the OMH right before his injury talking about his role as a possession receiver. When he first came to Nebraska he intended on being a deep threat and is now content on just getting past the first down marker with eight yard catches. Of course with this offense an eight yard catch is stretching the field!!

 
I respectfully disagree, Enhance.

A 25 yd fade route only requires a 3 step drop. The ball is in the air long enough for the receiver to get down field and if it is thrown right, it either goes out of bounds or is broken up (which eliminates sacks, batted balls and turnovers). Just the fact that they TRY it can be effective.
