Oregon and Scott Frost

Walk-on
First off, wanna say that I'm rooting for you guys to get back in the Top-5 where you belong. Growing up in Oregon in the 90's (when quality football was nowhere to be found in the State of Oregon), Nebraska was the football program that football-starved Oregonians tended to identify with, and rooted for -- a small, mostly rural state that beat the odds, built a successful program, and began to lure great out-of-state to come play for them. While Portland is kind of "trendy" place to live these days, Oregon has never really been a sexy place to live; most of the state is compromised of ranchers, loggers, and blue-collar hippies (yup, truckers and construction workers that grow their own vegetables lol). While we certainly didn't take the same route Nebraska did to achieve success, most Oregonians feel like we're beating the odds right now thanks to strong alumni with a lot of State pride. I imagine it's a similar feeling in Nebraska.

Anyway, when Scott Frost came on as our WR coach, I knew he'd be a great fit because of the program he came from, and because he played under a coach like Tom Osborne who was such an attention-to-detail guy that emphasized doing the little things right. So much of Oregon's recent success is due to how much value and film-room glory is given to great blocking -- particularly at Wide Receiver. As you may have heard, Scott was just promoted to Offensive Coordinator at Oregon. With the way the NFL appears to be headed, if Mark Helfrich ever decides to leave and Scott isn't back in Nebraska, he's might be our next Head Coach. I was in middle school back when you guys beat Tennessee/Peyton Manning for the National Championship, so I don't remember much about him other than he was a great player.

My question for all you hardcore Husker fans is, how do you think Scott will do as an Offensive Coordinator for us? What were his strengths and weaknesses while at Nebraska(both on, and off the field)? Do you think he'll be Head Coach material some day? Also, how's next season looking for you guys?

Oregon and Nebraska are comparable, minus the really cool coastline and Portland's grooviness. We have none of that. We have corn. :D

Frost is dead-set on being a head coach, and one of the local journalists here who know him best says it's highly likely he'll not only be a head coach, but a good one. He just gets it - he knows the game and he gets coaching.

Scott Frost is a determined guy. He wants to win and always will want that. You have yourself a FINE offensive coordinator and what is great, Your offense you run there, is close to what Nebraska use to run, just more upbeat and more new school. You run 2 RB's now, rather than an I-back and a FB.

Frost is also a great recruiter and him being your OC is only going to make more of a spotlight for him, which benefits who he is with.

There are a lot of Husker fans who drool every time his name is mentioned and go in lolli-land and think he would come back here. Only way that would ever happen, IMO, is for a head coaching job.

All in all, you have yourself a fine coach and an outstanding guy.

Scott is about as good as it gets as far as coaching DNA. Both his parents are football coaches (his mom does most of the actual game coaching as compared to his dad), he played and studied under Bill Walsh and is as determined and focus as anyone you'll ever meet.

You guys got a good one.

Thanks for the post and welcome. Frost definitely has the mental toughness to be a head coach. Something you might not realize is Nebraska really wanted Frost out of high school and he chose to go to Stanford over Nebraska. He took a lot of heat in state for that. When he transferred back he was welcomed but a lot of folks still held a grudge. When he took over the starting QB gig from Frazier in '96 he took a lot of the criticism when we stumbled a couple times that year. He actually got booed a few times. He just kept working and let that fuel him. When he came back in '97 he was as determined a player as I have ever seen. From all that I have ever heard and read about him he has all the intangibles to make a great head coach. I don't know of any weaknesses that he has, although I'm sure he has some as we all do. Good luck to you guys next year. I am anxious to see how he does next year.

A question for you too OreDucks77. Will Helfrich still call the plays next year, or will that be handed down to Frost?
