Oregon Week Pressers

I listened to the whole Bob Diaco presser specifically to find a quote that I could use to resurrect the "Crazy Crap Bob Diaco says" thread.  He uses some unusual analogies, and lots of unnecessarily big descriptors and adjectives, but nothing too crazy yet.  Stay tuned.

Stanley Morgan Jr., on the other hand, is a funny dude.  Here are a few gems from this presser:

Have you and Tanner (Lee) talked about the New Orleans connection you have yet?

"Like I told you before, he just wanted to be on my team, ... so he's a follower."

Do you think you can score every drive?

"Yes I can.......yes WE can!"

What did you think of your block on (couldn't hear)?

"Oh, yeah.  I told him he owe me a gift basket.  My birthday's this Thursday, so..."

and one from the immediate post-game interview:

You got a lot of weapons? - You guys feel like you have a lot of weapons?

"What're you tryin' to say?  I 'aint got no weapons on me!" -- * reporter laughs* - "yeah, I feel like we have a lot of weapons..."

Knevel didn't practice and had a walking boot on his right foot.  Expected to play.

DPE still didn't practice.

Bryant and Newby were back at practice.

People keep bringing up the 7 points to Arkansas State due to a special teams return. Well, I sure hope our special teams is ready to go because Oregon scored a TD on a return to open the game vs Southern Utah and they have maybe some of the fastest guys in the country back returning kicks and punts. I hope we don't kick to them.

Knevel is extremely injury prone.  Hard to be consistent when you are always hurt. I realize Farniok isn't a true RT but surely he will have to play multiple games this season. Hope he is up to the task.

Farniok played in the second half of the game Saturday.

If this is outside the scope of this thread feel free to move it, Mav.

Willie Taggart's full Monday Presser:

8:00 - Do you have updates on the availability of guys like Lana (LB?), Khalil (S?), or JuWaan (S?) [...]?

Coach: They were beat up yesterday, but... I think they'll be back this week.  We heal differently around here.  They'll be ready to go.

10:00 - Arkansas State gave them (Nebraska) a run for their money on Saturday.  Did anything jump out from that game?

Coach: Yeah.  That Nebraska's big.  They're strong.  And they won the ball game.  Arkansas State, they play well.  They played Nebraska tough, but [...] I didn't think that Arkansas state took control of the game.  I always thought Nebraska was in control of the game [...]

15:09 - I know its a work in progress, but how did Coach Leavitt feel about the defense after the first game?

Coach: He was encouraged.  Same as myself. [...]  They can tackle better [...] The PI's were killers.  Some were on 3rd downs. [...]  It's tough to keep people out of the end zone, and it's tough to hold people, nowadays,  to a low amount of yardage.  Those things happen, but you gotta do a good job of keeping them out of the end zone.  And try to do a great job taking the ball away. [...] overall he was encouraged and happy with the progress [...]

17:45 - Do you encourage the kids to enjoy themselves on the sideline, and is that something that you encouraged them to do?  How do you feel about "Swag Surfing"? (a sideline dance)

Coach: Yeah.  It's something I encourage. [...] Enthusiasm is contagious.  Watch the sideline.  Watch the people in the stands.  You can hear people talking about it.  You can tell how contagious it is.

I want our guys to have fun.  As tough as it is (football), I want them to have fun, enjoy it.  Be respectable to all of our opponents, but enjoy this.  This game is too tough not to enjoy it. [...] It's part of the culture we want to build here.  We want to have fun, and have a lot of energy.  I just believe so much in positive energy and enthusiasm.  The more we can have that - by EVERYONE in Autzen, the better it's gonna be.  We DEFINITELY have to have it on our sideline for all of our players and coaches and everyone.

What do YOU think about Swag Surfin'?

It's Awesome.

That's pretty cool.  We still gotta get it right.  We wasn't right yet.  We still in the process, but we'll get there.

Another Taggart Interview from today (Wed)

0:53 - What's your assessment of the two freshmen (Nose) Tackles?

Coach: They went out and did what we asked them to do. Jordon and Austin are gonna be some big-time players for us.  It was good for them to get their first collegiate game in, and get some reps, and we all get to see them play... we were impressed with what they did.

Did you see a lot of freshman mistakes?

Coach: You can call them "freshman" mistakes, because they're freshmen, but they're mistakes that everybody else made, too.  So there are mistakes that they have to get corrected, along with other guys.  We expect for those things to get corrected this week.

Did they do enough to make you believe they are ready to handle a Nebraska-type offensive line shoving them around?

Coach: I'm not necessarily going to think Nebraska is just going to shove our guys around, or anything!  They're young guys.  They know how to play football.  They've been competing against our offensive line all training camp.  We feel like we have a pretty good offensive line as well.  We don't look at it that way.  we feel like those guys are ready to compete, and they'll be ready to compete against Nebraska this Saturday.

2:06 - The defense forced a couple of turnovers.  How important is that, and what's it like to see the team get all excited after those interceptions?

Coach: It's REALLY exciting for me, cause I stress it a lot [...] we constantly talk about takeaways.  In practice we count them out when we get them, and it was good to hear them count them out on the sideline as well. [...] we got two of them, and now we want to get better.  Nebraska does a great job of taking care of the football, so it's going to be a challenge for our guys.  I think our guys will be up for it.

4:07 - Your freshmen safeties got a lot of playing time last week, and then with injuries, probably be the same this week.  Billy was a guy that flashed in the moment.  Did you see the same when you watched the game on film?

Coach:  Yeah.  Him and Nick Pickett both.  I was really impressed with those guys.  Billy was very instinctive.  You could tell he was a little nervous.  He was running around like a little ant at times.  Like: "just calm down a little bit, little Billy.  It'll be alright." [...] again, those guys have bright futures.  That's one game down, and they have a bigger challenge this week.  I know those guys will be looking forward to it.

How about Thomas (freshman corner)?  How'd you grade him out?

Coach: Thomas did well.  He's gotta work on some things with the PI's. [...] Thomas did what we expected him to do, and he will continue to get better.

After listening to both of those interviews, I feel better about our chances in that game.  I think Oregon's defense has some inexperienced players we can exploit in the secondary and D-Line.  Their starting Mike Linebacker and safeties are a little dinged up, too.  I think we will have some success on the ground throughout this game, and be able to shorten up the game a little.  We could still lose if our D plays poorly, but we aren't going to be blown out, IMO.

I also think Taggart is a good coach for that school, and I like his approach to creating an energetic, positive culture there.  It will likely help with recruiting.  In the short-term, though, playing loose with young players can lead to a lot of mistakes, IMO (turnovers, broken coverage, missed assignments, penalties, etc.)
