Osborne a racist--excuse me??????

It's ridiculous, but then again we get back to the "media hatin' on Nebraska". Oh well.

I will say this, however. I think the article has no foundation. It talked about Turner Gill being passed over for the Husker Job in 2004, but he was interviewed in 2007-2008 for the job! Granted I didn't look at the date of the article, so it may have been written before that. Bo Pelini was simply the smarter/better choice! We would have won less games this year with Gill at the helm than with Pelini at the helm.

And I don't want to offend anybody by saying this, but I think the Rooney Rule is complete bs. I know there is still racism and discrimination out there, but the simple fact of the matter is that white men are more interested in coaching than ANY other race. It's simply a fact. More white people = more white head coaches. If they league was dominated by black coaches than this would be a completely different story. Why should you HAVE to include a minority? I look at what a coach has done the most and base my decision off of that. I'm not going to give a guy like Turner Gill a job just because he is black. I'm going to give a guy like Bo Pelini the job because of his experience.

By the way, Affirmative Action got shot down in Nebraska, making sure Universities can not give out scholarships based on race, gender, or any other similar qualification. I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't go for a Rooney Rule in college considering most states are shooting down affirmative action.

 
He didn't exactly say anything about Osborne or NU being discriminatory but the implication is kind of there in the haze isn't it? Is the answer the NFL's Rooney rule? I don't think so. Anyone remember a couple of years back when one NFL team was all set to hire their coach (for the life of me I can't remember who it was or what team) and they couldn't get any black candidates to interview? I think they tried to interview Dennis Green and he declined because he knew who they were going to hire and didn't want to be a "token" interview. The whole situation was messed up because the team had a guy all picked out and could be punished if they didn't interview any black condidates. But no black candidates would interview because they knew they weren't going to be the guy. Catch 22.

I think what they were saying is that just by mentioning NU, Pelini, and Gill it is kind of implied that there could be some sort of discrimination involved.

You don't have to directly call someone or a program racist to accuse them of it. The article was about addressing a lack of black coaches in the NCAA, correct? The article then went on to cite various examples of how black coaches didn't get various jobs.

I quote:

"A former player got hired to coach Oklahoma State when Mike Gundy was hired. But Gill, a former player at Nebraska, was bypassed by the Cornhuskers and he now works at Buffalo."

The point is: Why even say that in the article unless you are inferring it? Why make the case that Gundy got the job and Gill didn't? At any rate, it just ticked me off and I had to vent. Write it off as more "media hating" and let's be done with it. I'm probably just frustrated because I can't get good Husker coverage here in WI--not even hi-lights.........

Why would Osborne's name come up a being a racist? I'm pretty sure Turner Gill used TO as one of his many references' and I have no reason to doubt TO gave him/them many props on why they should hire him!

 
I dunno, I didn't really think the writer called anybody out. Yes, he mentioned Gill and NU, but it was just as an example. I'm sure he could have cited any number of former players who now are assistants that haven't been interviewed by their former schools. I thought his point was that the lack of black coaches at the top level was more of a systemic problem, that maybe the NCAA needs to address, vs calling any one person a racist.

Anyways, everyone knows that's outrageous. For god's sake was Turner not a best man at TO's wedding? Also I think the reason that TO chose Pelini was because it wasn't his choice, pretty sure the boosters basically brought Pelini in themselves. Which has worked out pretty good, but still would have been really awesome to bring Gill back, hopefully some time in the future we can in some capacity.
