Osborne a racist--excuse me??????

I think it's just a poorly written article. The writer is kind of going against himself when he is demanding a "Rooney Rule" and then using Nebraska as a negative example when they were meeting the standards of the "Rooney Rule." He is mistakenly painting a picture that the OSU and NU hiring situations were identical and the only difference was black and white. Without any back story behind either job opening, it leaves the reader to assume Gill had no chance because of his color. I personally had Gill as my first choice and Pelini as a close second. I felt Gill had the calm temperament that reminds me of TO and when I thought of Pelini, I couldn't get the Snyder incident out of my head. But the pressure of the worst defensive year in the team's history made passing on the defensive specialist Pelini, almost impossible.

The article didn't really say anything like that. Turner was interviewed and didn't get the job, most likely because we were looking for someone with strong defensive ties. The article could have mentioned that he was at the time the head coach at Buffalo and is still head coach at Buffalo and will be playing on Dec 6th for a conference championship. He doesn't just work for the University at Buffalo. It is also possible that Coach Gill felt that he had somrthing to finish at Buffalo.

He and Osborne are good friends and to think that race had anything to do with this is stupid.

C'mon. We all know T.O. is racist. After all, he kicked Lawrence Phillips off the team just for being black. Oh wait, it was for beating up his girlfriend. Oh wait, he didn't even kick him off the team. He tried to ....(gulp)....help and save a troubled young black man? Search the guy for a swastika tattoo.

The point is: Why even say that in the article unless you are inferring it? Why make the case that Gundy got the job and Gill didn't? At any rate, it just ticked me off and I had to vent. Write it off as more "media hating" and let's be done with it. I'm probably just frustrated because I can't get good Husker coverage here in WI--not even hi-lights.........

That in itself is misleading because it implies he took the Buffalo job as consolation when he was already there. You can twist these any way you want.

 
Give me a break...reading that Osborne is racist into that article is a stretch...Nobody is going to hire a black coach unless he is qualified...period. And if he is the most qualified for the position, you can bet you a$$ that he will be hired. This is an example of the liberal press trying to push a liberal agenda...nothing more.

Oh and don't forget, it is because the media hates the Nebraska Cornhuskers. I know from experience as an alumni of UNL and the college of journalism. While we were encouraged to buy season tickets and cheer for our school, we were educated, trained and were tested on how many different ways we could portray Nebraska as a losing, cheating, worthless program and the fans were all uneducated farmers.

It was tough.

I agree with this, it's a great point. Guys, there is no outright accusation, but you can't deny that he intended to use NU as an example of potential wrongdoing. Either way, it wasn't very well written as too much was left to interpret.

I am more than a little miffed about the article. To even mention that Osborne is a racist is totally bogus. Osborne simply said that Nebraska felt that the Head Coach they were looking for needed to have a deep understanding of Defense in order to understand how to run the offense. Osborne was 1 in a million who knew how to play an excellent Chess game on the field and knew how to put an opponent in check in 1 move. I have met Osborne in person and he knows how to make everybody feel worthwhile. Maybe Gill wouldn't have been the complete fit for Nebraska and Osborne probably wished Gill well wherever he went. Tom Osborne who stood behind Lawrence Phillips and REFUSED to kick him off the team not because he needed Phillips, but because Lawrence Phillips needed to be a part of something. I think Osborne knew in his heart that maybe the only good constant in his life was Nebraska Football. Turner Gill will make a name for himself for all the right reasons. If Osborne would have placed Gill as Nebraska's Head Coach, and lets say that Nebraska went 7-5 or worse, then people would have second guessed Osborne and wondered if he put his heart in front of his head. It saddens me when people are in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation from the press.

 
Of course if getting more black head coaches was the goal, hiring Turner Gill does nothing as he's already a head coach. A point that the author probably realized and thus listed Turner Gill as just working for Buffalo. As if that's somehow less than working for say Colorado or other teams that aren't playing in a bowl game.

 
The article says, "The Cornhuskers bypassed Gill." Osborne isn't even mentioned in the article. It may seem to intimate something perhaps by not mentioning that Osborne was in Gill's wedding and that they have a close personal relationship.
