Osborne's comments on the Big 10 expansion

We also have a lot of ties to the Big 12, something that Missouri doesn't have. We have a lot more football tradition (which is the main focus of this whole argument anyways) and we are more grounded in the conference than MU is.
Actually, if you trace the Big 12 back through the Big 8 and back to the Missouri Valley, only Mizzou and Kansas have been in since the beginning, with out interruption. Nebraska quit for a few years (don't know why...tired of getting butt kicked maybe?). So, since Mizzou has been playing football in conference the entire time, NU is LESS grounded and has LESS tradition.
But we do have more tradition of success, which is what we really mean when we say tradition. You can say any school that's been around a long time has tradition, but when people talk tradition in football they mean winning.

I do not want TCU added to the Big 12, giving them even more of a Texas pipeline now that they're part of a better conference. Nebraska leaving for the Big 10 would be suicide. We'd lose many of our Texas connections and suffer for it.
By the same token, it would likely help to thin out UT's recruiting prowess. It would probably add a little more parity to the conference in general.

You need some sugar for them sour apples?

No sour apples here. Just pointing out to the previous poster the his or her understanding of "tradition" was wrong. Tradition has nothing to do with just winning. It has to do with history. Things like inventing the Split T formation, Homecoming, having the 2nd longest continuous rivalry in college football, the 5th down game, Tyus Edney... not to mention Johnny Roland, Roger Wehrli, Kellen Winslow and current World Champion Christian Cantwell.

Not to mention one of the greatest of all un-official college songs ever:

"Don't send my boy to Kansas,

The dying mother said.

Don't send my boy to Kansas,

I'd rather see him dead.

Just send him to Wisconsin,

Or better yet Mizzou!

Don't send my boy to Kansas,

For that will never do.

Rock Chalk Chicken Hawk,

Boo K U!" (Boo in the last line is more frequently the F word these days)

Congratulations out of all those "Traditions" you just mentioned nobody outside of Columbia knows about them. But good for you, you guys have something to hang your visors on.

The thing that kills me about all this expansion talk and conference shuffling is that the NCAA has absolutely no oversight. I would like to see the NCAA have a commish like the NFL and begin a standardization process. Take the 120 teams who are currently in the FBS and put together 12 strategic conferences of 10. Have everyone play the other 9 conference foes and then have 3 non-conference games. Then have the conference champs get automatic bids into a playoff and then for the other 4 spots have 8 teams in a playoff game. Then we hypothetically give the whole top 20 or so teams have a shot at playoffs. The bowls would run the day after Christmas thru New Year's eve. If I had more time I would write about my ideas for the conference make-ups...

It's just hard for me to believe that no one ever brings up a NCAA Commish...

Congrats on having a homecoming. What is that anyway do any other schools have that? :sarcasm

You've never heard of Homecoming or the Split -T formation? Ask Oklahoma about the Split T.

I liked your post, you bring up some excellent points.

I'm not sure I would want the NCAA to run it though...

definitely food for thought.

I know right, who would want our "governing body" to have some control over the championship. :sarcasm

So having three 10 win seasons in the last 59 years qualifies as more tradition than Nebraska? Oh you're cute

There was a billboard here in Lincoln several years ago that said, "Every program has a history. Few have tradition."

Sure, MU has its share of tradition. I'm not going to try to take away from that. But if you're comparing your traditions to ours, you're fighting an uphill battle.

Most Academic All-Americans in Football

Most Academic All-Americans, all sports

NCAA Record Sellout Streak (ongoing)

The Blackshirts - one of the best traditions in all of college football, one of the most readily recognized as well

The Tunnel Walk

Legendary Coaches - Devaney & Osborne (few programs have one, let alone two legendary coaches)

Consecutive Bowl Appearances - 35 (NCAA Record)

Those are just what I can come up with off the top of my head. All of these are readily nationally known, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple.
