Our Own Moniker

Guys, guys...as rawhide and kc have pointed out, why change a good thing?

Whether it be on the ground or through the air, nine times out of ten they always produce exciting results.

They are the Huskers and the Big Red. When they ran the option, did we want to change the name from option to something else? Did we, (and I'm just not aware of it?)

Honestly, none of the others really catches my attention. Some have complained about changing the way we play, now we want to change or create something else? Let's keep some traditions in Lincoln.

Go Big Red! :thumbs

I think we would all like to get this threqd over and done with regarding the Husker moniker. My prior post (above) lists the 4 most popular suggested names for the Husker offense to be alongside the vaunted Black Shirts. If any of you, such as the new member Fat Tire, would jump on this, we can try to get some respectibility to what the outsiders call our offense. Obviously, we need a name that exudes power, speed and fear to the opponent. Give us your favorite!

I received this from okmike:

Personally, I like the moniker Red Thunder. It brings to mind an impending storm. I believe that next or maybe the following year that is what we will see with the Huskers! Raging on into the future.

I would like to get your reaction to his comment and the list, so as to wrap this up and move on, Roy

The reason for the "why now" is because the national media and other outsiders (and Jim Rose) are using tags to describe our offense that are not complimentary, such as the ones with corn this and corn that. The Black Shirts weren't a tradition when they were introduced. So, starting a tradition on our grounds, rather than someone else's, gives us the upper hand in how people will think of us. Go Big Red is really describing the entire program, not just the offense or defense.

Red Thunder is my favorite, but of course, this isn't just about me. Red Swarm is too much like Red Storm, which is ST John's Univ's moniker. Red Lighting could very well describe our quick strike capabilities. I agree that Haymaker and MidWest offense doesn't have much impact or character to an outsider, as some of you opined.

Which is better, Red Thunder and the Black Shirts or Red Lighting and the Black Shirts? Either one sounds fierce and is unique and not subject to outside ridicule.

Once a consensus is reached, how would you suggest that I communicate this name to the world? I thought I would start with the major news outlets here in NE via email. If a consensus of some degree isn't forthcoming I guess this is an exercise in futility and should be abandoned, as some of you have stated.

Thanks for your thoughts.

That's what I don't understand. Nebraska has never been highly regarded by national media anyways, so why should we care what others think of us now? The only way something like this would get jumpstarted is if a local sportswriter or radio personality or even Jim Rose doing play by play came up with an idea, or heard of a tag that this person wanted to use over and over again. That would get the ball rolling, but I believe that your quest may be an exercise in futility as you say. Good luck if you go forward with something. To be quite honest, I don't have a problem with Corncoast, or corn anything. WE ARE THE CORNHUSKERS!!! Why is that negative? Taking West Coast O and making it Nebraska. I could care less what the media calls our offense. They could call us the Redheaded Stepchildren and I wouldn't care if we put up 4-500 yards a game and 40+ points and win games.

DJR313: I appreciate your opinion and perhaps you're correct. Do you object to me following up with this process, including the Husker play-by-play people?

By the way, what does your moniker mean?

I don't object, I say good luck to you. It makes no difference to me what our offense is called, just as long as we score points, don't turn over the ball and win games. By moniker, do you mean my user name? Very clever if you ask me, my initials and birthdate.

I've got to end this!

1) Red Thunder and the Black Shirts, or

2) Red Lightning and the Black Shirts?
Not trying be a complete bad guy; but honestly, I would rather call it nothing the "Red lightning" or "Red Thunder". Sorry, but these are two unimaginitive names IMO. These are names that would be plastered in some wild-font on the back of a t-shirt for a high-school homecoming. I think we could come up with something a little better, more regional, more distinct, and more inventive. The name might as well be Red Dog, Red Bull, or even Red Dawn. :sarcasm Seriously, I think Steven Segal starred in "Red Thunder", or was that the 80's helicopter movie. Wait, that was "Blue Thunder". I say let it go and see how time labels it. A bad name sticks around just as long as a good one. Apologize for the direct honesty. You may all disagree with me, but at least I my conscience will be clear.

Thanks for your honesty Red Man! I'm seriously concerned about a bad moniker catching on. If I took the favorite, Red Thunder, and promoted it, would you really be upset? Would you just as soon Corn Coast catch on? I don't want to dishonor anybody's opinion, but how does anything ever get unanimity anyway?

I need more respondents, PLEASE. If most of you felt that I should forget this try, I would!!
