Overrated Heisman Winners?

All-Conference
from Ben Maller.com:

One scout, the Cincinnati Bengals' Greg Seamon, was quoted on a Web site ridiculing Troy Smith as an overhyped Heisman-winning quarterback who would flop in the NFL or not make it at all, joining a list that includes Terry Baker, John Huarte, Gary Beban, Pat Sullivan, Andre Ware, Gino Torretta, Danny Wuerffel, Chris Weinke...
well, at least he didn't say anything about eric crouch...

... Eric Crouch...
oh, snap! it's on!

... and Jason White. "Really, he's not that fast," Seamon said of Smith. "He gets run down by defensive ends. He's not real big. He kind of stares down his targets. You didn't see those breathtaking, thread-the-needle throws [against Florida] that you'd hope to see from a top-of-the-draft quarterback."
so, whatdya think? valid point or just a hater?

Completely valid. When reading the first snippit I didn't see the second one. After reading the first list of names, my first reaction was "What about Crouch"?

I don't know if I'd put Weinke on there. He's been in the league for a number of years now. No...he's not going down in any record books, but he at least has made a nice little career for himself. More than can be said for a lot of the guys on that list that never even made it a full year.

Don't get me wrong...the heisman is for the top player in college football...not who is going to make it in the pros. The majority of Heisman winners deserve the award or to at least be in the running based off of that.

Another name I immediately thought of was Ty Detmer (1990 winner). Talk about Heisman fading into obscurity. I didn't know he was on an NFL roster somewhere or another for 14 years?!?!?! Green Bay, San Francisco, Cleveland, Detroit and Atlanta.

From wikipedia.com:

"In 14 total seasons in the NFL, Detmer has played in 54 games (with 25 starts), totaling 6,351 yards passing with 34 touchdowns and 35 interceptions."

I kind of agree, I don't think Smith will be a good NFL QB. A heisman winner doesn't = a good NFL player. Another one not on the list who did nothin in the NFL (because he didn't have the chance) was charlie ward. He did have a decent NBA career though.

Good comparison. Charlie Ward = Troy Smith. Ran his offense in college very efficiently. Run/Pass threat. Didn't make mistakes. However undersized and not the right skill set for big NFL potential.

I think that's pretty accurate about Troy Smith. After watching the National Championship game this year it was clear as hell that this guy is way overrated!!! He won't do nothing in the NFL

I think Smith's pro career is really going to depend on who drafts him and how they develop the offense around him. If the OC just uses him as a drop back passer, then he is going to struggle. But if the OC can game plan the offense around Smith the way the Titans did with Young this past year, he may be able to have a successful career.
