OWH: Husker Camp Countdown

That's not relevant at all IMO. Those guys are going to other schools on scholarships these days to start with. The difference is the quality of walk on then versus now to Nebraska, as 1. Nebraska isn't remotely the same draw as before and 2. It doesn't make sense for a lot of families to pay today's outrageous prices for tuition and walk on when they can get a scholarship at any number of schools and still get similar exposure for transferring later or making the NFL.
Amen brother!

Not necessarily.  There are walkon players being compensated in other ways.  We have seen quite a bit of that over the last few years around the country.  I agree, it is different today but it is still possible to have a diamond in the rough who ends up being championship caliber.  I think we should leave that evaluation up to the coaches and not bag on the idea that an 18 year kid can develop into an NFL caliber player.  Josh Allen is a recent one that comes to mind.   Spencer Long is a Nebraska example.

I feel like we are discussing two different things.

1.  NU should not be relying on walk ons.  I think we all agree on that.

2.  If NU has a lot of walk ons starting, it is a sign that the coaches suck at offering scholarhips.

3. Yes, you can still have guys that don't get an offer and become really good players...but NU should not be relying on that as their game plan for a depth chart.

Yeah, I am saying that they are not the same.

Who were the 2 on offense and 1 on defense?
Jason Benes, Reggie Baul (went on scholarship year 3 but was a walkon), and Mackovicka...  Turman is also listed since he started one game that year at K-State so they actually had 4 walkons start that year in at least one game.

Your stance didn't come across like that - I don't disagree with the above but your original comment was a bit harsh imo - "I know I know, this is horrible, but Nebraska, especially with NIL and Rev Sharing and 105 roster...should pretty much NEVER be starting/relying on dudes that were walk-ons."

That stance is correct...NU should pretty much never be starting a walk-on.

If that has happened, more than likely, it is not because something awesome happened.

First of all.  With NIL and the 105 roster, we won't have ANY walk ons even on campus.

So....this discussion is pretty much meaningless.

What we will have is 105 players on the team. (if that's what they ever decide is the final answer). We, as fans, won't even know if any of these players would have previously been walk ons or not.  Then, we can just forget about this discussion all together.

Incorrect.  Rhule states they will still take walk ons, though he does acknowledge it will be harder.

I'm not following how that's going to work.  We will have 105 scholarships and the roster is limited to 105.
Who knows?  It might just be a statement to “appease the fans”.  Either way those kids that would normally have walk on opportunities here should get more opportunities at FCS schools and hopefully elevate that level of football.  I also think that’s great for those individuals so they can actually play in games.

Yes, that's what I see happening.  Those kids are going to go to places like UNK and those teams will actually be better.

I don't know that I've ever seen it officially announced that the B1G will allow 105 scholarships.  The SEC is going to stay at 85 scholarships (for now), which I don't understand at all but that's what they're saying.  So there will still be 20 walk-ons per team.  Sounds like Rhule is expecting the number to be at least somewhat less than 105 in the B1G.
