Mike Riley rubbed his hands as if a hot meal had just been put on the table.
“Oh, boy, I’m excited,” Nebraska’s coach said Thursday. “And at the same time, it’s one of those things, we’ve got to go out and do it.”
Riley was talking about NU’s offense, the pro-style system he’s been waiting two years to truly install. He might as well have been talking about the Huskers’ season as a whole, since they’ll need this offense — led by quarterback Tanner Lee — to purr if they have any designs on a West Division or Big Ten title.
A stingy defense — which new coordinator Bob Diaco may deliver — can carry the Huskers to seven or eight wins. But if Nebraska wants to run with the league’s best, its offense will have to be well above average.
