Navy had to replace 9 defensive starters from last year's team, got hit with injuries early in the season, had their best player from last season transfer (now starting at Maryland...players at service academies can transfer without losing a season of eligibility--one of the many challenges at Navy), the fastest guy on the team runs a 4.6 forty, they are basically playing with Division 1-AA and Division II talent...

Yes, it is fair to bring up the defense...I'm sure Paul Johnson is quite aware that defense is important (he won two Division 1-AA national championships at Georgia Southern), but you can only do so much at Navy, and that's one of the reasons he doesn't pass much, to keep the defense off the field.
No, he doesn't pass much cause he runs the option offense. Look at any where he's been and they have run the ball a majority of the time.

Right, I said that was one of the reasons, not the only reason. He prefers to run, but he has often said if he would throw more if he had the personnel to do it. When he was OC at Hawai'i he had 2400+ yards passing offense in a season. His offense is probably most like West Virginia's offense, they just have better personnel to work with.

All that matters to me is an offense that puts up enough points on the board to win games, I don't care if it's option, West Coast, spread, or Fullback Dives every play. If his offense at Navy is competitive with Division 1-A schools with the personnel he has to work with, there is no reason to believe it wouldn't work even better with better players.

If you google news Paul Johnson Nebraska you'll find some rumblings in Annapolis about this. It seems like it has some legs and it makes sense (option, Navy's high graduation rate).
well, let's face it: they're military academy and they have already been sworn into service after their junior year.

if they don't graduate, they have to pay back Uncle Sam one way or the other.

It is absolutely fair to be concerned about his defense......but , at least he had the balls to aknowledge that it was very unacceptable.....this is fact....he made no excuses about injuries....he said changes will be made, becuae he was embarassed by the defense....... Sounds a lot different than the guy we just let go....in fact, I believe that if BC would have said the same thing as PJ, he still might be around....

I don't want to go back to the old-style offense, but face it.....teams that run the ball WIN...... you must run the stinkin football consistantly to WIN.... It is safe and demoralizing.... Navy once again leads the nation in rushing....... He knows how to throw the ball (Hawaii)....and will put a nice mix together.....

I have done a lot of research on each coaching candidate. Out of all of them, this guy reminds me of a younger Dr Tom. Great work ethic, family man, cares about "his" kids graduating, good listener and a proven winner. I am telling you, this would be a great catch for Nebraska. Although he's not my top choice we can't go wrong if in fact Dr Tom choses this guy!

You might say he looks like Devaney thinks like Osborne. :)

Keep in mind that the talent they recieve at Navy, or the other two academies is always going to be low. They have weight and fitness standards that have to be applied to all who attend, including atheletes. He can do what he does with an undersized team, think of what he can do when there are no restrictions on who he can recruit.
