Gill wouldn't be yelling at refs like this and would be more cordial to the media.
That is because Gill is an honorable and decent man of integrity and is mature enough to see the big picture. Men like Gill are rare --- but are certainly a breath of fresh air when you see them or are around them. Integrity, class, and good sportsmanship are becoming increasingly rare these days in sports. Since the advent of the internet, decency and decorum, and honorable interchange have taken a back seat to ranting and rudeness on the behalf of fans.
Both fans and coaches alike should model their behavior off of people like Turner Gill. Ron Brown is yet another example of fine character --- another who handles situations well and with integrity and reasonableness. These are the types you'd like to see the youth in America pattern their conduct after.
As for Bo.... he is a fine X's and O's guy, he knows the game well, he is a motivator of his players. But.... Bo has not displayed the character/integrity/class and/or sportsmanship and respect for others that guys like Gill and Brown have. Maybe he will mature. Grow up some. Grow into being more than just a coach but a leader and a fine representative for the university. I hope so. He certainly has a fine model to draw from in Tom Osborne --- who, like Gill and Brown, is a man worthy of respect.
Thank you. Trust me, I have not always liked/voted for every president that has been in office since I've been alive, but I have always rallied behind them and appreciated the good that they might have done. I feel the same way with Coach Pelini and will continue to support him as long as he is Nebraska's coach, but the behavior is ridiculous. Yeah, I've heard the "passion" and "fire" arguments and I know that people with those qualities are needed on every football coaching staff....but not like this, and not with the head coach.
The head coach is the administrator, the CEO, the face. He doesn't pick and choose when he is the face; he is the face when he is coaching a game, talking to refs, talking to the media, talking to recruits, talking to civic organizations, etc. When Coach Pelini lets his temper get the best of him, he looks like a spoiled kid, a jerk, and a bully...the types of people that I don't want to be associated with. He lacks what we like to call "tact". It is embarassing.
Living in a place with virtually zero other Husker fans, I am constantly forced to defend this behavior to outsiders who praise his defensive genius, but think he acts like a bigger baby than Steve Spurrier (and, I mean, at least Spurrier is witty). Also, you have to be kidding yourself if you think that refs don't talk amongst each other and have it out for Coach Pelini as soon as he takes the field. Unless Coach makes some drastic personal changes, calls will go against Nebraska for the remainder of his career.
I see Coach Pelini as a Will Muschamp kinda guy, lots of fire, lots of pep, lots of motivation and would love for him to be the DC, but I think he needs to spend some time in charm school before he can ever be a legitamite, long-term HC.. For the record too, this comes from a guy who still would have preferred Gill after the Kansas victory last year, after the Clemson victory, as well as after the moral victory in Blacksburg. Let the venom-spewing resume.
P.S. If we win the National Championship next year, I'll be as happy as anyone else and praise Coach Pelini's genius, but I'll still have a problem with the behavior.
