Pelini's success

I was reading a great article in the OWH about Bo Pelini (LINK) and there was a quote in this article by Bo Pelini that pretty much sums up what makes him a great college coach and what Callahan has failed to realize as a college coach.

"The Huskers were coming off a disastrous 2002 in which they crumbled under Blackshirt expectations, resulting in coordinator Craig Bohl's dismissal. During the first scrimmage of spring practice, Pelini ordered his defense into one very basic scheme for the entirety of practice. Won't the offense catch on and expose us, Husker defenders asked. Doesn't matter, Pelini said. Success starts with effort, not scheme.

"Success starts with effort", that quote right there is one of the reasons i would love to have Pelini as our next coach. Pelini gets it, and Callahan jsut doesnt understand that college football is more about passion than it is about preparation. I am not saying that teams should jsut not prepare cause thats stupid, but you have to be prepared and then you have to be excited to play. Callahan thinks that if you do something all week then you will do it on saturday but this is not always the case in college football.

Pelini is absolutley right. Winning begins when you believe it's possible to win and you play like a freak to ensure that it happens––you swarm all over the field and run over the offense like a Mack truck. The next level is playing fundamentally sound football. Finally, and only after the first two are achieved, does it matter what scheme you run.

Our team, minus a few blips this season, has not shown that they can sustain the first two and most important aspects of defense. It's no wonder their schemes don't work.
