Penalties

Pretty good article from the OWH on penalties. Presents both sides pretty fairly but he's an illustration of what I was talking about:

A chop block erased a bulldozing catch by Cethan Carter and a legitimate scoring chance against Northwestern. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty sealed the Wildcats’ win that day, too.


There was that defensive holding call in the Michigan State game, which wiped away a sack that would have put the Spartans in third-and-13. MSU ended up scoring a touchdown on the drive.

Two false starts stalled a drive against Iowa. Nebraska later nullified a fumble recovery because of a hands-to-the-face flag. There was also a late hit on a punt return that set the Hawkeyes up at the NU 33-yard line.

An offsides infraction on a UCLA point-after try — NU got flagged for four of those this year and had three more declined — gave the Bruins a do-over after their kicker misfired. That flag cost the Huskers a point.

That hurts.

FYI.....

Sorry if I wasn't clear. My point is, once again...there are areas that would pay bigger dividends to concentrate on. No, you don't ignore penalties. But, to me, it's not a grave concern that we should be wringing our hands over.

If you fix some other issues, those games aren't in those close situations where the penalties make a big difference. Every team makes penalties. It's just that if everything else is going well for the team and they are ahead by 21, the penalty doesn't mean much.

 
It such a hard thing to measure the impact of because of the variables discussed above. When you just simply look does the most penalized team lose more, then most of the analysis I've seen says no at least at the college level. NFL is more unclear, I've seen conflicting analysis.

Turnovers on the other hand are much more clear in their impact.

Obviously you want both cleaned up but if you had to pick, turnovers would certainly be the obvious choice.

We'll probably get a lot better in the penalty department without one said player. He was good for almost a penalty a game in 14'. He was just about as bad in 15'.
