Penn State Game Preview

I gotta laugh at how Penn State fans are sneering at John Butler. We're ranked ahead of Penn State in both total and scoring defense. Oregon's better than anyone we've played, but our overall schedule has probably been tougher, certainly in terms of power conference opponents.

Can't judge a guy at previous spots. Saban at MSU...Frost at UCF...Kiffin prior to Ole Miss....Joe Brady form LSU to Carolina to Buffalo....It's a crap shoot for sure.

PSU is going to want a proven guy who can get them over the hump, but who's out there?

There just isn't a stable of proven elite head coaches, and the few that there are are staying put. Day, Kirby and Dabo are the only three active coaches with a natty, Lanning is set with billionaire money, Riley is set with SoCal life, DeBoer isn't going anywhere. I know Cignetti will be looked at, but he's 62, also has billionaire backing and full buy-in with low expectations. The PSU job would be worse than what he's got right now.

Maybe Lane?

They're ultimately going to have to take a chance and gamble because nobody is out there with the resume that is gonna take the job.

Other than a hit to his pride/ego, the dude just hit the lottery....$50 million buyout if I read correctly. Hell, I'd be good to be fired and get 10% of that....Or even $1 million.....
He’ll make 21k a DAY for the next six years doing nothing. I could go for that

Most Penn State fans sure don't seem to like the idea of hiring Rhule...

I can't blame them, and it's tied into @Lorewarn 's comments:

I feel like where Rhule is at right now and where Penn St. is at (and wants to be at) don't really align. Some people are already worry-warting a bit about Rhule and Penn St. but honestly I think it's both premature and misguided, at least right now.

People are going to point to the last three Penn St. losses as why Franklin was fired, but that was really just a catalyst. The "Franklin can't win big games" mantra has been around for several seasons now and that's what ultimately doomed him. He was 4-21 against the AP Top 10 and 17-26 against ranked teams. You can't fire a guy like that and then go and hire the guy who is 2-23 all time against ranked teams, even if Rhule might be a bit more affordable. I don't think most PSU fans or boosters would be impressed if Rhule was hired there.

One thing that might alter this is if Rhule somehow goes 10-2 or 11-1 and were to make the CFP. But even then... PSU is going to be an attractive position to a lot of very qualified head coaching candidates both in college and the NFL.
