Penn State Game Preview

Generally I would agree but counter point, no he won't. I think its possible they let him go if they lose the season entirely. Would probably need to drop one before OSU and get blown out by them or Indiana. Thats alot of what ifs but I think its a possibility now only because they dropped one to the worst team in the conference.

Flip side they play angry the rest of the season needing every single game from here on out and they blow the doors off of us.

This is a concern of mine. It's the one place I would be concerned that Rhule might jump to.
I'd like to think Rhule sticks with us but it is his dream job

I would not want to take a job where they fired a guy who made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs. It is the reason no one wanted the Nebraska job after Coach Solich was fired. I think the talk of firing him now is a bunch of people blowing off steam. Unless they think they can get Saban, they are fine with Franklin. He got them to the playoffs. How long has it been since we won the conference? Solich got us there.

Yes. I'm hoping that PSU has more of a pragmatic approach to this instead of a knee jerk reaction to one bad loss or one down season. Historically, that is how they have been. However, obviously, the people managing the program a long time ago aren't there anymore.

I am one who believes that, more times than not, programs pull the plug on coaching staffs way too early instead of letting them work through issues and build consistency in the program.

Penn St won't be firing Franklin at the end of the year. They buyout is $50M.

But it might be smart of Franklin to move on to a different job as it seems like he has run his course there. 12 years is a long time. He's a good coach, but not a championship level coach. There will be some decent jobs open.

Rhule quite frankly hasn't performed well enough to get hired at a place like Penn State.
This is spot on. I'd be happy to have some of Franklin's consistency. Maybe this year's team was over hyped - like Texass and their wonderkid QB. But overall, Franklin has done a good job at PSU and has place PSU solidly in the top level of the conference.

If Rhule can't fix or is unwilling to fix the OL(keeping OL uncle coach around for several more years), NU will remain as a second-tier program at best. Why would PSU consider buying out Rhule's huge contract here?

Are people really entertaining the notion that PSU would fire a coach who consistently wins 10+ games, has frequently been in the top 10 and only a few months ago was in the national semifinals, just because he choked against UCLA...in favor of a coach with a mediocre HC record who also recently choked against UCLA? Is this how bored we are in midseason?

On the other hand, I really like Matt Rhule, but if PSU donors were willing to shell out $100 million in buyouts for Franklin and Rhule, and then we just straight up trade coaches with each other, Nebraska would come out ahead in that deal.

Wasn't thinking Rhule would be the replacement but honestly not sure how Franklin's seat couldn't be considered at least a little hot right now. They went all in this season and are now sitting at 3-2. If they drop another one before the OSU game you might as well pack up the season from their perspective. Didn't think about the 50 million dollar buyout, that will certainly prevent him from being fired. That being said its alot easier to tell a program the grass isnt always greener from the outside looking in. 12 years of almost creates frustration even if it shouldn't. Its like shooting an 81 in golf every time you go out. Its a damn good score but you'll still be pissed you can't break 80.

They shouldn't be considering it. But, it's what programs do.

I didn't watch a second of that UCLA game- how did human team anchor Drew Allar play? It seemed, from the highlights, that their defense couldn't stop UCLA for large chunks of that game.

GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!!!
