Phil Steele says Nebraska will be #17 heading into the season

What was the prediction? I'm lazy and don't want to scroll back.
Short version: what we've seen so far in the Pelini era is roughly as good as we can expect. We'll probably never be terrible . . . but we'll also never be great.
Will you define terrible and great for us?
9-4 to 10-4. Not terrible, not great.

The status quo.

Myself, still Huskers hope............"Nebraska is back and we're here to stay" (assuming 90's era) and "We are right now, we can beat anybody". Probably forever until I died (Huskers fan here).

Is HuskerNationNick still here? Any thoughts on the defensive line play and Thad Randle?

I'm afraid the "average at best" assessment was giving Thad Randle a little too much credit. I legitimately think that he might be the worst defensive lineman to ever play for Pelini.
Which unfortunately says a lot about the guys around him he's somehow playing over. Sounds a little like last year.
Kaz was quoted in the OWH before the Purdue game I believe as saying until we are MORE comfortable with our defensive guys he will always have either Ankrah or Randle on the field. It is not a testament to the young guys, just an experience thing. "Worst DL" is a bit of a stretch IMO, I don't like to do this, but I believe that there are guys on the roster that you could easily give that title to.

uhhgg - because that means we're sitting Moss if Randle isn't in there, beacuse Ankrah has to be on the field. I hope this ends quickly. RG & Moss together gives us one of the best DE combo's in the B1G, if not the best. These guys are going to be absolutely dominant next year - hopefully by end of this year.

Ankrah hasn't played as bad as people think. Nowhere near the pass rusher as either of them, but he's been good the past few games against the run and that is one thing Gregory hasn't been good against.

It puzzles me why Thad plays as much as he does. He's easily the slowest off the ball. Curry has the best technique of our DTs but VV has the most raw ability. At this point, talent and ability has to outweigh experience. We have games to win.

I don't think that it's much of a stretch, if any. I can't think of a single defensive lineman that has been quite as bad as Thad Randle. As Knapp pointed out, it's likely that his lethargic play is due to the numerous injuries he has sustained, but nonetheless, I believe his play is probably the worst of any defensive lineman that Pelini has played.

It really doesn't seem fair to say it, but it really is true. Sorry Randle, but you shouldn't be on the field.

Randle's asterisk is his injury. "Worst" is a label that may be fair based solely on his play, but he has a more than legitimate excuse for that play. He's been Martinez circa the latter half of 2010 for pretty much his whole career. Guys like that, from whom we want more production but aren't getting it because of injury, should get a pass in the court of public opinion.
But...but knapp, he's still starting so what does that say about the people behind them? SURELY it must be that they are awful...that HAS to be the only reason.

Not sure the reasoning behind the sarcasm. What other reasons would there be?
Experience. I think it's known that our coaching staff doesn't feel comfortable playing guys with inexperience. I don't know why that is, but I'm sure they have their reasons for it.

Also, it's not like Thad isn't getting his plays off for Curry, Collins, and the like.

I don't know, he has been mostly a non-factor. I don't know how many times he's been in great position to make a tackle and didn't make the play. Seems to happen at least once per game. He couldn't even tackle UCLA's freshman punter.

He's behind Gregory, Moss and even Randle in tackles despite - I'm guessing - being on the field for at least as many snaps as any of them. Gregory has him doubled up. McMullen is tied with him and VV is only one behind meaning he basically has the fewest tackles of any of our regular lineman with the exception of Curry. Four players have more sacks than his one. Perhaps he plays solid and allows others to make plays but he really doesn't make many himself.
