PJ Smith Article in OWH

So the whole doghouse idea has now been debunked, TWICE, by self admissions of poor practice, execution, etc by certain players themselves. This is very troubling, becuase I'm starting to get this feeling that the fans dont know it all.
That's because the vast majority of fans aren't knowledgeable about what goes on day to day within the program. Bo keeps things pretty secret when it comes to why certain players aren't on the field and when asked he deflects the question or ignores it entirely. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. And so the majority of fans are left to speculate. And if a player they perceive as being talented isn't seeing the field then they move almost immediately to the doghouse theory. Why? Because it is the simplest explanation.

Duh....they have to be telling the truth, right!?? This absolutely validates your counter-claims. :sarcasm

There's some evident discrepancies when in fact I've heard from people that have seen the practices live, mention that THERE IS a DOGHOUSE. For example, our talented WR, Jamal Turner, opened up his mouth to the media about our starting QB post-Minnesota game and got punished. Now...I am not saying that was the MAIN reason why he wasn't playing much in games, but I guarantee it was a solid influence on the amount of PT he received. We can sit here and speculate all we want....these players do get punished and sometimes severely (no PT, extra laps, etc.). If people want to call it the "doghouse", they can.

Riiiiiight. The same JT who admitted to dogging it in practices last year, couldn't remember his routes, drops TD passes and can't block a pylon. Yeah, Bo's doghouse s*cks!

Meet Tim Marlowe, the most kickass blocker and route runner on the team.

If you a recruit a kid and he can't grasp the schemes it is either a) the schemes are too complicated or b) a poor recruiting choice.

IMO, it is the job of the staff to get these kids ready to go. If it means certain packages ie calls for JT to get the ball in a simplified package or getting a DB/rush end into the game to blitz the QB on 3rd and long. ie you line up here, run in really fast and get the guy trying to pass the ball.

We seem to have a lot of talent recruited, but some times doesn't pan out or gets lost in the shuffle.

what amazes me is how after last season we keep reading about all the guys that were hurt and couldn't play.......i guess i missed all the announcements during the season that these guys weren't playing because they were hurt......

That, and Bo doesn't go out of his way to publicize these things. Very secretive about stuff like that.

I didn't see PJ much after the Wiscy game, where he struggled mightily. I recall him completely whiffing on containment for a Russell Wilson bootleg which led to a score.
This has been my point every time PJ comes up. He admitted after this game that they had worked SPECIFICALLY on this play during the week but he still fell for the fake and got caught looking inside. Just because Pelini's system is relatively "complicated" doesn't mean it's rocket science. If you're specifically coached to look for one thing (QB boot) in a specific situation and can't perform, I don't think that's really all that complicated. Not trying to put the entire year on one play but at some point a player has to perform to deserve to play.

As for PJ, you confirmed what I was observing and thought. I hope he gets it together and help us out. I agree that Pelini's system isn't impossible to learn, beacuse it has been proven that it can be. Throughout last season I saw numerous times that plays that our guys, in the seconday specifically, did not read keys which could have prevented big plays.

Anyone remember the 2010 Texas game, and PJ Smith and Thenarse whiffing on Gilbert grape?

I sure do...
