QB Brion Carnes makes favorable first impressionHe picked himself off the turf and limped toward the trainers running to greet him.

Brion Carnes began to walk with them toward the sideline. That's when he pulled one of his most impressive moves of the day.

He reversed field, back to the huddle.

That plucky bit of resolve in the third quarter was one thing to like about the redshirt freshman during Saturday's Red-White Spring Game, but hardly the only thing.

Carnes looked as good -- if not better, at times -- than the more experienced Husker quarterbacks around him.

He threw 15 passes, completing 11 for 173 yards. Two of his passes were for touchdowns, including a 49-yarder to true freshman Jamal Turner that delighted the 66,784 fans at Memorial Stadium.

His peers couldn't help but notice.

Jamal Turner's flip a no-no, but his play? Oh, yesSay this for Jamal Turner:

The kid knows how to spice up a scrimmage.

Regarding that forward flip into the end zone by Nebraska's true freshman receiver ...

Eric Martin flourishing at defensive endLooks like Eric Martin finally has found a permanent, stable home on the Nebraska defense.

And very likely, a starting position.

No longer will Martin's ferocious hits and knack for the football be relegated to special-teams duty.

Just ask Cody Green.

The quarterback twice crossed paths with Martin in the White team's second offensive series in Saturday's spring game. Neither encounter ended well for Green.

First, Martin blew through the line and blew up an option play in the backfield, tackling Green for a 5-yard loss.

Five plays later, Martin again hit Green behind the line of scrimmage, this time forcing a fumble at the Red team's 3-yard line that defensive tackle Thaddeus Randle recovered.

I was visiting relatives in NE and just returned. I was at the Spring Game last Saturday and have read some of the other threads.

My .02 cents:

*Yes, Carnes, Turner, and Martin all played well. So did Burkhead and Legate.

*Martinez and Green looked as they did last year and did not see anything new from them.

*Was looking for improved play from Kinnie, he did alright. Also focused a lot on Kenny Bell and he did alright. Appeared SJB did not play much and I thought he would be highlighted more. It was obvious as to why Turner is at WR now...he is our most dynamic WR and should hopefully play a lot.

*Groaned seeing Cotton drop balls and Green fumble.

*Zach Taylor was interesting. I liked his ability more than Kildow and Jones.

*Whaley and Ebke appeared to have a nose for the ball on defense.

*TE Robert Barry was a huge target and kid caught some balls.

*Last year I thought Ankrah was too thin in the legs and base...he appears to have added bulk there.

*Jay Guy is a clog in the middle on run defense.

*Lots of DB's playing and tough to keep track of them all.

*Kicking and punting was decent.

GBR!
