***Polls are out**

The Vulvarines took a pounding in both polls after getting raped at Jerry's World. Dropped 11 spots in both polls. Ouch.

An unfair drop for Michigan. They played a ridiculous Alabama team, that even folks on HuskerBoard are wondering about being on par with the mid-90s Huskers. That's a scary-good Crimson Tide team right now.

Alabama played like it was their 10th game of the season and Michigan played like it was their 1st. Not bagging on Alabama in any way because they deserve that #1 ranking but Michigan looked woefully unprepared on defense and Robinson had an awful day. They will get better when Tousant (sp?) is back but they played like a 19th ranked team.

Yeah, I'm conflicted on this. On one hand I applaud Michigan for scheduling a tough opponent. But OTOH, they got absolutely creamed. It was embarrassing. Way more lopsided than the 41-14 score. Dropping eleven spots seems a bit harsh. But I couldn't see dropping them less than 6 or 8 spots for a shellacking like that.

I really wish they would take this more seriously and not take any form of poll until the first of October when we have some sense of who is decent.
I think actually that you might be taking it too seriously. It's not too dissimilar to the betting odds discussion in the other thread. The preseason poll is an educated guess, and then it settles out from there. It's pretty straightforward. And, some people enjoy discussing it. ;)
So, the BCS poll, which recognizes that any poll taken before at least a month of games are in the record book, is incorrect in their approach?

No one is asserting that people don’t enjoy following and arguing about it, I’m just stating the obvious…i.e. that “educated” guesses are just that……”guesses”. And those guesses are more likely to be rooted in regional biases and remnants from the last season than any pertinent data associated with this season.

As to your claim that it’s pretty straightforward…………I’d say it’s just the opposite. Try and make sense of the movement or lack of movement after just one week. Example Michigan. If they really were top 10 material, then getting throttled by what looks like a great team should have been anticipated. But to almost fall out of the top 20? Do you agree Oklahoma, Michigan St, Wisconsin lived up to their ratings? This entire scenario is set up because of preseason “guesses”. Ergo, for most teams, you only move if the team ahead of you (arbitrarily placed by guess) loses.

I’d much rather see a month of games and then a more educated and justifiable placement of who sits where on the hierarchy.

I'm certainly no Missouri fan but I'm surprised at how little respect they are getting in the polls. They're only 3 point underdogs against Georgia this weekend yet ranked at about #35. That said, I'm not sure I'd bump any of the current top 25 out to make room for them. Looks about right to me.
Missouri is going to get mauled in the SEC.

One thing the Huskers showed me this past weekend is that if they play their best and limit their mistakes, they are capable of beating every team on their schedule. Let's all pray that the penalties and turnovers stay gone.

Something that may only interest me: UCLA beat Rice 49-24 and racks up over 600 yards in offense in the process. Southern Miss gets waxed by Nebraska 49-20 and gives up more than 600 yards in the process.

Despite this, Sagarin still has Southern Miss ranked ahead of UCLA:

50 Southern Miss

53 UCLA

Makes you wonder how we'll do against UCLA. The computer doesn't think much of the Rice win, apparently.

Most of the college football insiders think the UCLA program is an utter mess, and that So. Miss is a program on the rise. They'll probably stick with that storyline as long as possible.

Also the Sagarin program spins its wheels for a few weeks until it gets some meaningful data built up.

Looking ahead to college gameday for the Wisconsin games our competitors will be:

Tennessee vs Georgia

Texas vs. Oklahoma State- Not if OU beats Texas

Michigan State vs. Ohio State.

I think MSU vs. OSU will be our main competition...They should both be undefeated as should we and Wisconsin...however i think we the whole alternate jerseys and hype for revenge on our game, and the fact that we are already locked in on abc primetime i think we have a good chance...

There is no way we beat out MSU and OSu for gameday, ESPN has a serious crush on Urban Meyer and msu.

I for one am a little nervous about the way our Defense played against the run. If we played containment we seemed to give up 5-10 yards. The blitzes were really effective if we would have made better tackles. I saw some improvment, and it was the first game, but UCLA running the zone read against us may have the game a lot closer than some people think. I really hope I am wrong.
