Portal QBs

I keep seeing Lagway popup in the media. What is the obsession? He's Texasing awful. I watch one of his games this season and he single handedly lost it for his team 3 times with turnovers in the 4th quarter. Almost every metric is worse than Dylan. 16 TDs to 14 INTs, yuck!

Also, Aidan Chiles. Please no. He got benches at MSU for a reason and that also got his coach fired.

I liked what I've seen of Colton Joseph's highlights from Old Dominion. Not sure if there's mutual interest or not

Do any QBs (or any skill position for that matter) ever go to a school for a tryout or showing or in person assessment?
I haven’t heard they do but would be interesting if they could.

I think we need to go for a QB who is pass-first but is “mobile enough” to run a little zone read or a dart here & there.

Where I think we’ve gone wrong so many times over the last 10-15 years is by having these run-first guys who can’t throw well enough to keep defenses honest.

Opponents play us in heavy blitzes with tight corner coverage. Our offensive coaching tends to suck as well, which has been part of the problem (further exacerbating the problem of not being able to counter the blitz).

And then our QB winds up being our leading rusher because the main thing we do is zone read keepers on early downs, we get into 3rd & longs (where our QB is at his weakest), and then we punt. We’ve seen it so many times.

Please for the love of Vishnu…don’t bring in another Jeff Sims or Tommy Armstrong. Get the guy who actually has some passing acumen but is at minimum “mobile enough.”

Great post.

I can't help but think Matt Rhule would have had a much better start if he'd gone with anyone but Jeff Sims and Hendrick Haarberg for that first season.

Every program understands the value of a dual-threat quarterback, but Nebraska has a history of giving run-first high school quarterbacks the chance to keep playing quarterback in college, when other programs either wouldn't recruit them or steer them to another position. Offensive identity aside, even Tommie Frazier doesn't get to be Tommie Frazier with the #53 scoring defense behind him.

I would love to see a ranked list of available QBs (realizing any ranking is subjective, but who cares) along side a ranked list of teams in need. Maybe the team list is ranked by likely NIL they’ll spend on a QB. This would allow us to set expectations on who we might get and then speculate whether we punched above our weight.

Maybe some knowledgeable poster on this board could pull that together. A guy can dream can’t he?
