Post game thoughts

I think we are lucky to get out alive in this one. I'm happy with the win, but I didn't agree with the roughing the passer penalty that kept us alive on 3rd and long. I hate to play devil's advocate, but I think if that call went against us in that situation we would be furious. That led to three points that we may or may not have gotten without the call. Also, although it was a good call, the facemask on the jailbreak screen on 3rd and 15 completely saved a drive that led to a touchdown.

Our defensive line did not play well. Yes, Kansas had a solid gameplan on offense to neutralize the line, but even on straightforward drop-back passes, our line was not getting much if any penetration. I could not believe we let them run so consistently against us on their first touchdown drive. Run after run after run after run and we weren't stiffening up. I also think our defensive coaches did not adjust well during this game. Their second touchdown drive was the same type of passing plays over and over and over, and we weren't adjusting. We weren't blitzing. We were just sitting there in man coverage and getting killed by the crossing route all the way down the field. Where was the blitz adjustment? Reesing wasn't handling the heavy blitzes very well. And yet we stuck with the four man rush almost every play and let them pick us apart. As much as I like our DBs and how much they've progressed, they can't lock down big time receivers like Kansas has every single play. Seems like Bo and Carl were content playing bend-but-don't-break all the way down the field. The problem is, on both TD drives, they forgot to not break.

Offensively we probably had our best game against BCS competition to date. Niles Paul had a huge performance; I was happy for him. Helu looks pretty close to his old self. Zac Lee had easily his best performance. Our pass blocking was improved and that was huge for building Lee's confidence. I thought Watson called a very smart game for the most part. We actually used McNeill. We took some deep shots. Mixed up the running plays. Solid job on offense all the way around.

On to KSU. They are down after the shellacking they took today, and I think we have a good chance to beat them. We're going to have to commit to stopping the run, which we had trouble with for most of the game today. I wonder if we see more 4-3 against KSU. Aside from Dillard, our LBs haven't gotten much experience this season. Should be interesting.

:snacks: :corndance

I thought we shut down the run pretty good today. It was Reesing's scrambling that got us. And I'm still getting tired of the lack of holding penalties on our opposition. We get bear hugged and they don't even think about reaching for the flag.

Agreed about the defense. The line did not play to their potential this afternoon. The defense got the job done, though, so whatever else we may think, the important part is the W. Hopefully they take this poor performance to heart and come out next week with a chip on their shoulder.

(Feels good, though, doesn't it, decrying a performance where 17 points were given up? It's been ages since we could expect such greatness out of our D.)

Anytime we play against a run & gun type of QB, our defense is usually in for a long day. Case in point:

Taylor

Sheffield

Reesing

I'm always on the edge of my seat. Our secondary has been known to blow big plays against those types of QB's.

Nonetheless though, I'm happy that our "O" stepped it up today.

:yeah

The play of the defense is to me no way concerning. GIVE THESE GUYS A DAMN BREAK. 17 POINTS. sheese, i know we've become accostomed to 7 or 3 or 10, but come on, do any of you have enuff common sense to understand the significance last week's performance played today. All i saw was fatigue, physically and emotionally, combined with what i thought overall was a somewhat conservative gameplan DEFENSIVELY due to Reesings scrambling ability on top of throwing the ball to talented receivers. The D is fine, 6 more days of rest and then time to go again. The best part about it all is the offense did their part to win as well, same as last week and the week before, and they continue to build on a new identity. The penalties on KU, too bad. How many penaltied does our defense have called on them, but they find a way to play thru it. Say what you want in all negativity. W W W W W W W W W.

I havent seen this brought up much, i will. Larry Asante's hit on Reesing, tho i do not argue the penalty cuz a rule is a rule, but it damn well better not bring out some suspension of some sort as the guys on tv were suggesting. I am so sick and tired of quarterbacks gettin protected by yellow hankies, if you dont wanna get hit then go play badminton damn it. IT'S FOOTBALL AND YOU'RE WEARIN PADS. If these guys are gonna go feet first, they better be able to do it with time enuff for the defender to lay off, as i thought asante was already in motion/air to make the hit when reesing went down. If this is how it is, then why dont the officials just go 100% protection and say "if you want to, just take a knee and we'll give you a five yard gain" everyone wins, qb gains his yards, and the d does not get a penalty. These damn rules are so inconsistent too, and that pisses me off the most. see the hit on Zac Robinson tonight? isnt there a helmet-helmet black and white rule? BIG 12 OFFICIALS SUCK-PLAIN AND SIMPLE

It is ok to play devil's advocate, just not Husker's opponent advocate. While I agree that the roughing the passer was very questionable, on the face mask play, the play was well designed and the execution looked good. The only guy with an immediate chance to make the tackle only had a shot at the helmet area and Khiry had some blockers set up. I'm not sold on the fact that we wouldn't have gotten the first down. I wouldn't opt to go back and have that first guy miss entirely and "see what would have happened," but the play wasn't necessarily doomed and might have stolen a very exciting moment from us.

The blitzing was dangerous and as you said, the crossing routes were killing us. I thought going to zone would have brought those crossing receivers into the area of someone either stepping in front of a pass or taking the head off of Briscoe and Co.
