Post-Practice Presser - March 30

Couple things, Shotgun snaps are sporadic, that's scary. I know it's just highlights but in the third video count all the lateral/flat passes.

The short throws and quick hitches and swing passes, etc were the missing link from our offense the past two years. A well executed screen pass has been all but extinct in years. Callahan used the middle screens to little Cory Ross extremely well. These pass plays will really slow down a pass rush and will force the LBs to spend lots of time reading and reacting rather than crashing the line of scrimmage to stuff the run so much. The more effective these plays are the better our inside runs will be. With the flare passes, quick screens, big screens, draws, etc, the more the offense will be able to sustain drives. This also helps the offensive line get leverage and get position advantages over even more physically powerful def linemen. When the defensive has to defend all over they have to stay home and this takes away the blitzes and gap shooting, etc. The O line has to be able to carry out their assignments effectively and work as a unit. If we can see the entire offense knowing what, when and why they are doing what they are being taught, then there can be good things produced from our offense. The offense will be young but this ought not be an excuse. Hopefully, we will see something that really looks like major college football in the spring game. This will be the great sign of what will be 2017.

Here comes the cold water...

Based off of what I am hearing from both Mike Riley and Danny Langsdorf...Nebraska is about to become a soft, finesse, team. (Shades of Callahan.)

We're going to run screens, draws, swing passes, etc.

Until proven wrong, I stand by my assertion that Nebraska will not win the Big 10, or national title, with such a soft approach.

Passing the ball? Okay fine.

But if Mike Riley truly wants to win a conference and/or national championship...we're going to have to get smashmouth along both offensive and defensive interior lines.

And based off of what I am hearing from them, that's not what direction they're planning on taking.

You can run swings, screen and draws and still not be finesse. It is not 1 or the other. I think Riley's has said since he got here that they are wanting to be able to run the ball and dominate the LOS.. Just haven't been able to. The thing I don't understand is the lack a gap scheme we run. I know they have said in interviews that the lineman struggled pulling, but we also suck at screens but we continue to run them anyways.

You might be right about Riley not winning a conf title or more but it is not bc we are running screens, swings and draws. All title contending teams have to have balance. Not 50/50 run/pass but being able to keep you honest on defense and not allow you to key on just 1 phase of your game.

To me, there's only one way to rock...

To apply it to football: passing the ball is fine. Dumping the ball off to TE and RBs when WRs downfield are covered...fine.

But almost every team, save for a few exceptions, have been able to line up and pound the ball when required. My fear? We're rehashing Callafraud's offense and will see the same results.

LSU with elite talent on both sides of the ball and a great coach just fired him bc all they could do was pound rock and nothing else (while littered with nfl talent). Auburn at times has no pass game and can only run and struggles. Shoot, Saban has even opened up his offense much more to achieve balance. You have to be able to do both to win championships.

What is MR thinking?????? We have won so many championships over the past 10 years and now he wants to scrap it all and add a few trick plays like screen passes and swing passes.
