Postmortem 2014: The Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Wisconsin game was the last straw for me. He proved he wasn't a leader you can count on in big games and when things get tough.

I really thought after squeaking one out against Iowa that he was going to get another year. I was a little shocked he was fired after the Iowa game.

For me, the results of 2013 both on the field and on the recruiting trail were enough for me.

For the AD, the relationship with Bo was clearly frayed. I felt like Bo was on thin ice the entire season, even after the 5-0 start. Nobody knew the quality of our team, and I wasn't sure what kind of season it was going to take in order for the AD to fire him.

Bo's personality, as revealed by audiogate part I and II showed the public what kind of person Shawn Eichorst had to deal with. It's no wonder we hired Mike Riley, his personality had as much to do with it AD anything else.

A postmortem has to be about Bo Pelini, because he's the one who is dead to us.

But if we're honestly looking back at the 2014 Nebraska season, it also had several of the best highlight reel plays I've seen in my many years as a Husker fan.

I'm not gonna let anyone take those away from me.

I lost faith in the players that Bo coached during this Wisconsin game as well.

When Davie was followed around the sideline by Bo until he sat down and put his head in his hands while Bo finished screaming at him, I knew it was over. He just ripped and ripped that guy until all his anger was out. The team completely collapsed and more Gordon 60yd TDs were on the way.

I don't care if football coaches scream at players, but I just saw a man not only screaming but NOT coaching. I wanted Bo gone at halftime of that game. His method simply wasn't working anymore.

Mike Riley better coach his players, they better be prepared to fight. His "nice guy" persona won't mean crap if his teams don't play w fire and hold up under pressure. Can't have anymore of that crap.

I think he's wrong wen saying no one saw the decision coming. I remember sitting on my freinds couch towards the end of the Wisconsin game saying exactly "this is it. This is Bo's last blunder. This sh#t cant fly no more". He (my friend) said no way in hell. I said "well, next week when Minnesota comes to Lincoln and wins, will you change your tune". I thought the firing was inevitable regardless what was to happen them last two games.
i think a lot of people knew it was an indy or bust kind of year. and then they way we lost to wiscy? yeah, that was it to anyone not suffering from extreme myopia and a obsequious love of bo. we all knew that the already tired 70%+ win percentage and 9 wins arguments no longer had a leg to stand on. no matter what urb may have said before about firing 9 win coaches.
I think alot of folks wanted him fired after the Wisconsin loss, but weren't sure if it would actually happen, especially after him daring the admin in 2013.
I wanted him gone after the Iowa game. Actually long before that. But after the Wisconsin loss I felt something had to change. Except this time it was going to me that could do something about it. And not watch. Maybe put games on the radio, if I chose to make time.

Even though I kept watching the game and the rest of the season, I was checked out. USC was exciting though.

The irony is that in virtually every game where it seemed Bo Pelini's job was on the line, the team that loved him so much came out and played worse.
That is perfectly stated. And it will probably go down as one of the great mysteries of the Pelini Era. Why would the team that would "fight at the gates of hell" for Pelini crumble in those games? Where was that fight?
I think there was actually plenty of that fight. I felt like Bo's leadership quality with the team, as unhealthy in manner as it ultimately proved to be, had been taking us to our win totals through sheer force of will sometimes.

I remember during the 2013 Northwestern game when it looked like there was just no way. I thought the hammer was going to come down that week. Then when Westerkatch happened, I thought, "Man! somewhere, someplace, Bo Pelini has a guardian angel."
