Pretty good article on Mo:

LINCOLN - Sitting in his room back at San Francisco City College, Maurice Purify took out a pen and paper and made a list.

Husker receiver Maurice Purify beats Oklahoma State's Calvin Mickens to the end zone for a touchdown Saturday.

It was the second semester of his sophomore year, and the following semester Purify would head to Lincoln to become a Cornhusker.

In preparation for his jump to major college football, the Eureka, Calif., native wrote out a list of statistical goals.

Score two touchdowns in a game. Record 100 receiving yards in a game. Get 10 catches in a game. Catch 10 touchdowns in one season.

Well, I think MO has had two TD's in a couple of games. But he hasn't had a 100 yard game yet. He's come close a few times but hasn't hit it yet. And he has 5 TD's on the season so far. He should hit the goal of 10.

The only goal he really doesn't have a chance of getting is the 10 receptions in a game. Callahan likes to spread the ball out too much. But I have to admit, watching Zac play, it seems Zac looks for Purify first on his progressions.

I really thought Zac and Frantz would have had great chemistry coming from the same JUCO team but I just haven't seen that chemistry yet. Seems like Taylor favors Purify a bit more? Or maybe the coaches feel more comfortable having Zac throw to him given his size and ability?

It's always good to say "I'm glad he's on our team" :thumbs

He will keep getting better and better and next season should put up some monster numbers. It would nice to get a preview in one of this year's games by blowing up for 150+ yds and a few tds.

Hardy just seems to have slipped into the background of this receiving corps. Only goods things are going to happen for MO the more he gets the ball thrown his way. I just wish that ZT wouldn't lock in on him so much. But he is one of only a few that have shown they will catch the ball on a consistent basis (I know MO has dropped some, but not as many as some other WR's).

I love Purify as a receiver and he is obviously our best receiver. I was surprised at some of the balls he dropped last Saturday though!!!!

Mo 'Purifies' SportsCenter, Nebraska

by Jackie Christensen, 11/6/2006

Little Mo might have to change his name to Big Time Mo.

For the second time in 2006, a Humboldt-Del Norte Conference athlete has been featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter’s Top-10 plays.

Eureka High graduate Maurice Purify, who signed with the Division I Nebraska Cornhuskers as a wide receiver at the end of last football season, threw a 28-yard touchdown pass on a trick play Saturday in the Huskers’ 34-20 win against Missouri, which landed him at No. 9 of Sportscenter’s Top-10 Saturday night.

Fortuna basketball player Clayton Hunter was featured in January at No. 2, after he sank two half-court buzzer beaters in the same game.

“It’s a play we have practiced for about four or five weeks,” Purify said of his reverse-pass touchdown. “I just went around the outside, thinking about selling the fake. I wasn’t going to throw it at first, I saw a guy over the top, but then I saw (wide receiver Terrence Nunn) get loose, and I just threw it to the back of the end zone. He made a great catch. It was a better catch than pass really.”

Purify is currently second on the Huskers’ receiving corps in receptions with 25, but is leading Nebraska with 503 yards, six touchdowns (the next closest receiver has three) and 50.3 yards per game.

Purify made his third start of the season on Saturday, and on top of delivering the touchdown pass, Purify added two catches in the game, one for a 7-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

“My role is getting bigger and bigger,” Purify said. “I’m becoming a go-to guy and they just count on me to make plays.”

Although Purify’s playing time has been increasing each week, things started out a little slower than he had expected.

On Sept. 16, when the Huskers played the University of Southern California, which featured Purify’s Logger teammate Rey Maualuga, Purify didn’t even play in the game.

Frustrated by the fact his mom was in attendance, Purify questioned his decision to play for Nebraska.

“If you would have asked me after USC, I probably would have said I wanted to transfer” Purify said. “I thought it was a special day for me since my mom was there, and I was angry about that. Then I just went and talked with (offensive coordinator Jay Norvell) and asked why I wasn’t playing. He told me (head coach Bill Callihan) didn’t want to put anybody on the field who didn’t know what they were doing. I told him I knew what I was doing, then they started throwing me in. Since then my role has been getting bigger and bigger, and now I’m starting.”

In the end, Purify admits the time spent becoming familiar with the program before being thrown into the fire might have helped him in the long run.

“I think it was good to make me wait, to make sure I knew what I was doing,” he said. “They didn’t want me in there before I was ready because they didn’t want me to lose confidence if things didn’t go well right away.”

The Huskers travel to Texas A&M on Saturday.

Before the USC game I read MO had his family in attendance. I figured he would be upset if he didn't get the opportunity to showcase his skills for his mom. A lot of husker fans were a little upset he didn't see action as well.

Nebraska is the program that'll catapult him into a pro career and then of course, he can buy his mom a new house. I'm glad to see he understands why Callahan held him out and eased him into the rotation. If he doesn't redshirt hopefully 4 star wide receiver Niles Paul will understand when the same thing happens to him next season.

I love this guy, and it's great to see him continue to make plays. His pass on Saturday was a great spiral, and he is the best wr on the team.

:yeah Well hopefully with us getting him back next year and having Keller at the helm big things will happen. However; I'm going to miss Zac he is one helluva a tough guy and he has brought us back from the depths of hell!!!! :woo
