Putting the "student" in Student Athlete

International Man of Mystery
From THIS ARTICLE

Not sure quite where to put this since the article covers all sports, but the Huskers have dominated in the classroom once again:

Husker student-athletes produced another stellar year at the University of Nebraska, continuing NU’s tradition of academic success. Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports to 269 with six honorees in 2008-09, while also setting a conference record with an astounding 172 academic All-Big 12 selections during the year.
Something I found funny buried halfway down the article:

The track and field team alone surpassed Colorado’s entire athletic department in the total number of academic All-Big 12 picks (55) across all sports and matched Kansas State (58).
When ONE TEAM equals the entire output of another SCHOOL, you know you're doing something right. :horns2 :cowbell:

Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the article and read about our ridiculous number of academic accomplishments in all sports.

I am not surprised by NU beating sCUm in Academic All-Americans. Look at how their regular student body acts....I am sure the athletic program fits right in with them. The AD and President at sCUm should be embarrassed by that stat!

We're so far out ahead of the #2 school (Notre Dame) in All-Americans that it would take years to catch us if we stopped having any All-Americans right now.

Years.

I will say one thing - since 2000 we have been slipping. We're still #1 this decade, but we've only got 82 total compared to Notre Dame's 80. I think academics "slipped" sometime in the middle of the decade, but I also think we're putting that to rights as well.

As of the end of the 2008/2009 academic year, Nebraska led #2 Notre Dame 268 - 206 in Academic All-Americans (all sports). In football alone we have 98 Academic All-Americans (we could go over the century mark this year!), which is #1 of course. Notre Dame is #3 with 52, while Penn State is a close second... with 53. =)

i like how on NCAA Football 09, in recruiting, nebraska's academic prestige is excellent and michigan's is elite.

do they not know about the Academic All-American list?

In terms of academic support for athletes and promoting athlete academic's nobody beats us. But Mich is one of the top state colleges in the country. I guess it depends on what they're grading on.
