Putting the STUDENT in Student Athlete

I'm not saying all the athletes take advantage of this, nor am I trying to group our athletes as being stupid. BUT, the services that are offered, for those that take use of them, pretty much have it made. But I'm sure its only a decent handful. The point I'm trying to make is that if you are struggling in school or aren't the brightest, they will almost do school for you in an attempt to keep a good rep. All you have to do is go to class. I've heard multiple stories of athletes, mainly football and basketball, bringing in a paper that they were told to start, and give their best "effort". They can leave it with the tutors for "edit and proofreading", the next day its the only thing that's about the same is the topic. But overall, I will agree that unl has a good group of athletes academically.
They were the same rumors I heard when I went to UNL. They're urban legends that students who felt underprivileged perpetuated until they've become part of the lore of UNL. And it's one of those "prove it's not true" stories that you can't unprove - like proving Unicorns don't exist. Like most rumors this likely has a kernel of truth somewhere, and I'm sure some athlete(s) sometime had work done for them. But implying it's the norm is incorrect.

Further, tutoring is available for all students, regardless of whether they're athletes or regular students.

The point of this thread is that we have, overall, some damned fine student-athletes at Nebraska.
Lol at the tutoring link, Idk if you are implying, but I'm very capable of completing my degree without the need of a tutor.

It seems that you wish to believe that football players receive no more special attention, or are treated any differently, than any other student. Good one. Regular students can't go to the athletic tutors.

Also, if youre implying that I am under priveledged, that's pretty funny. Calling me a jealous person because I have been told by athletes themselves about tutoring that is available to them? Man, if everyone who isn't an athlete on campus is under priveledged, there must be something wrong.

I'm just saying what I know. And I could prove it to you if I wanted to release more details. Youre right, it may be single situations, but it happens.

Read what I posted, Lyons. Nothing I posted was about you. I mentioned that I'd heard the same rumor when I was at UNL - 20 years ago, and that it likely came from disgruntled students. If you were at UNL 20+ years ago, then you should take that to mean you. If not, likely it had nothing to do with you.

Nor did I provide that link because I was implying you needed tutoring. I don't even know how you came to that conclusion.

Nor (this is getting funny now) did I say that NO athletes are treated differently. In fact, I said the opposite (see what I bolded in my post here).

I don't know what your agenda is in pushing this line in a thread like this. To me it seems like finding a thread about the 95 Championship team and insisting they were all a bunch of criminals because a tiny minority of the team were busted. Sure, it happened. What's the point of belaboring that? And why would you do it in a thread celebrating the good things about the team?

Eh, I guess I misread what you were trying to point out in the first paragraph. I thought you were implying that I'm just a jealous student with the under priveledged line, and it must of led me to be turn defensive of the rest of your post.

I'm not trying to take away from the accomplishment of the team. Good for the department.

Not all of the athletes do their work. I remember a few years ago there was an incident where a someone "left" their thumbnail drive in the computer and another person came along and edited their paper, pretty sure it was a football player's, it was someone that was starting but i cant remember who it was but their paper was written like a third grader. I am happy we lead the country in that aspect but i just wonder how many of the student athletes actually earned their grades. I also heard Tom Osborne tried to persuade professors to give certain athletes good grades (this comes from a co workers son who was a professor at UNL for a few years. I do believe there are several professors would be be more lenient when grading an athletes though. I know ill get flamed for this post and im happy Nebraska is the top in academic all americans but i just wonder how many athletes (in every college) actually earn their grade.
What? Why would you get flamed for posting such a solidly-researched story like this? :sarcasm

I'm familiar with the culture among UNL's profs and the general opinion of the football team of said profs. The majority of these people are not fans of the athletic dept and would report any coach who asked for favors for their players, especially Osborne.
I dont know what professor's youre talking about but i knew a lot of professors that loved football, except one..she was also a kansas grad. Im just telling a story i heard, from someone who works at UNL and also i actually saw the thumbnail drive incident take place (yes the football player actually left it there and someone came and edited it). Im not saying all the athletes are like that, I think its moreso the starters/bigname players but this obviously happens everywhere. Like with duke bball, kansas bball, nebraska/osu/texas/nd football etc.
What will this prove for a professor to do this to a student athlete? IMO this so called TEACHER should be turned in and fired for discrimination. If I was that Student athlete I would also consider filing suit if this is the case. I am not saying that there isn't some cheating or other stuff going on, but to fail someone just because they are fortunate enough to have the athletic ability to earn a scholarship so they can go to college and better themselves is Crazy. People think that with the tutors and all of that they have it so easy when in fact it is very hard to be able to do both. I also think that it take a tramendous amount of disipline to be able to make it in todays student athletes world. I would say at least 95% of the Student Athletes do it the right way, and it is the 5% or so that don't that this narrowminded teacher is speaking of.

Two Huskers make the first team, and another makes second team in the 2011 Academic All-America Team.

From HuskerMax:

2011 Capital One Academic All-America Team

First team:

Rex Burkhead - 3.38GPA (History)

Austin Cassidy - 3.91 (Psychology)

Second Team:

Sean Fisher - 4.00 (Business Administration)

Austin Cassidy is my pick for Most Likely To Be Seen On A Sideline Carrying A Clipboard on the team this year. By all accounts he's a coach on the field, a true student of the game. And that psych degree won't hurt in coaching.

Side note - Notre Dame, who sits at #2 behind Nebraska for most all-time Academic All-Americans, failed to place any students on the first team this year. Nebraska's lead over the Irish sits at an even 70.

Cassidy was a psych major undergrad. But I think he is a business major in grad school this year.

btw, Cassidy is one of only 14 Huskers to make the Academic All-America Team twice. Congrats! And I agree that he is most likely to make it in coaching. He's got it in the genes. :)

QB.......Robert Griffin.......Baylor...........Gr.........Copperas Cove, Tex.....3.67.......Political Science
I wonder how many Heisman winners have made it on to the Academic All-America Team?

I love the "football players must be getting help and people must be doing their work for them" comments.

Same exact ones I heard 15 years ago!

Well, there are definitely some players that NEED the help from tutors, etc. But people aren't doing the work for them.

And as for the guys that get Academic All American, these guys aren't getting help from tutors. They are smart enough to get things done on their own!

Just announced that Burkhead & Fisher become Nebraska's 300th and 301st Academic All-Americans. Nebraska still leads the nationl. Notre Dame is 2nd with 227. Congrats guys. Well Done
