Sacking the QB: How bad were we in '04? And a goal.
Colorado’s Defensive Coordinator, Mike Hankwitz, aired some interesting thoughts on Sacks:
1) Goal: To get sacks on 15% of an opponent’s attempted passes is “excellent.”
2) Sacking the QB is more difficult now than in the past…
--QB’s increasingly use 3-step drops and 5-step drops.
--The rise of the mobile, athletic QB's.
3) Getting sacks reflects how effective your Defensive Backs are in covering receivers.
2004 Big 12 Sack Percentages: Sacks / Opponent Pass Attempts
(Note: These stats are for games against Big 12 opponents only.)
1. Oklahoma: 11.3% (31/275)
2. Missouri: 8.5% (17/201)
3. Kansas State: 7.5% (16/213)
4. Texas: 6.9% (20/288)
5. Colorado: 6.1% (17/280)
6. Oklahoma State: 5.8% (15/257)
7. Kansas: 5.7% (16/283)
8-9 Texas Tech: 5.1% (12/237)
8-9 Iowa State: 5.1% (12/236)
10. Baylor: 4.9% (11/225)
11. Texas A&M: 4.5% (14/310)
12. Nebraska: 4.2% (14/333)
Worth noting: Our Big 12 opponents threw on us more than anyone else (333 pass attempts)…
PS I believe the key to pass defense has more to do with the pass rush than the DBs. Roy
