Question about Neb leaving

Sorry if this topic has been discussed but I could not find any information on it. I know the Neb is a powerhouse program but why does them leaving dissolve the big12? How come the Big 12 cannot just grab another school or run with 11 members? The Big Ten only has 10 programs. Thanks

Um, it's not quite that simple! ;)

College football is in an "expand or die" mode. Let's say Nebraska leaves, and other eleven stick together and continue on. The loss of Nebraska means less TV revenue coming in than there would been had NU stayed. This means the athletic programs get less money, which means they are weaker than they would have been otherwise.

Now, let's say the conference breaks up after NU leaves. Texas and the five bolt for the west. Immediately this forms a super-conference, one that Fox TV will pay big bucks to televise. Instantly you have much MORE money coming in than would have happened had NU not left the Big 12. The athletic programs get a bigger share of a bigger pie and grow stronger.

That's kind of simplified, but that's the money trail.

no offense but its about money, TCU doesnt have it and wont bring it. They would be the last option and probably not an option at all. The big12 already has the Texas market and bringing in another Texas school would just further dilute the revenue stream. simple fact is that the big 12 would be better off dropping Baylor than adding TCU because then their would be more pie to go around and they would lose little to no market.

BYU is the obvious answer. They aren't Nebraska, but they were the only non-BCS school, other than Notre Dame, that finished in the top 30 in home attendance last year. They have a lot of tradition as well.

Iowa was a perfect fit for the Big 12. It speaks volumes about the lack of unity in the Big 12 that the Big 10 can swoop in and steal Nebraska, but that the Big 12 would have no chance at stealing Iowa from the Big 10. Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of programs the Big 12 could've targeted for expansion into a super-conference. The Big 12 could've survived, but the incompetence of the leadership and lack of cooperation led to the demise of the conference.
