Question for all on Bill Callahan

I don't see why he would want to be an OC for half the pay and twice the stress. It's not a faster way to the NFL. We constantly see college coaches getting offers and the coaches hired in the NFL from and NFL OC position were with there teams a long time unless your Norv Turner who is awful and this is his 3 gig AND we less OC's than college coaches and D coordinators this past year. So NU is the best option for him right now. I don't think he is 'dying' to get back there but I think he will coach elsewhere after he is done here.

Lou Holtz like stuttering is insulting to myself and to him. That is totally unnecesary.

I think every coach says the right thing when they are supposed to. I think he will coach again elsewhere even if it is in 10 years. That is my opinion and there are only 3 coaches I can think of who that isn't the case right now....Lloyd Carr, Bobby Bowden and JoePa.

Did he demand a higher salary comparative to others in the Big 12. I would guess he is around the 5th place salary in the Big 12 now. He could have easly said he wanted as much as Mangino or Leach. He may not have gotten it, but he could have gotten far more than he did. He is at premier program and does not make much more than some of the ACC or Big East mid pack finishers.

He is loyal and dedicated to this program and state. Money normally tells the story. He did not demand nor did he mention his contract in the media. He is upfront and I believe him when he says this is home for as long as we will have him. So far for me he can stay as long as he wants.

Into the fourth season of his original six-year deal, Callahan said his contract had started to become an issue with recruits and their families.

"There were several times in the last few months where I had parents and recruits visiting personally, upstairs in my office," Callahan said, "and they wanted to know what my status was, where I was headed, where I'm going.

"I told them I'm going to be here, but I think the proof is in the pudding. I want to be at Nebraska. This is where I want to finish my career."

I never even heard his name come up when any of the job openings came available. I highly doubt he goes back to the NFL to be an assistant. Whenever head coaching jobs came available, I never even heard about any teams looking his direction which is odd because coaches like Wade Phillips and Norv Turner were hired. IMO, they are considerably worse than BC. Whether it pans out or not for them remains to be seen but I liked Pittsburg's action by giving a young unproven coach a chance more than Dallas's or San Diego's direction by giving a crappy coach the reigns to their program.

 
BC has no options right now in the NFL. He was considered a poor leader and he players turned on him. He took a super bowl team and won 4 games with them. His best option is college and I think he is in the perfect situation for himself right now regardless of my personal views about him leaving. He is loved by the leadership and the fans along with support from the players. This is heaven right now, but if the big dollars come calling we'll see what he does.

Again, you really don't know what you're saying. I work with a guy who's brother played for Callahan at Oakland. It wasn't Callahan's fault the Raiders fell apart. According to this player, it was the players who refused to play. They felt they were too good for practices; refused to accept criticism; refused to perform their jobs. There was a bunch of whining and crying going on. Apparently there still is. And until Al Davis either dies or sells the team, the Raiders will continue to have problems.

 
Somewhat topical Colin Cowherd was talking on his show that college head coaches have it much better than pro coaches. Two points which stuck out were the guaranteed money for the coaches at the bigger programs and the cost of living. He mentioned Carroll at USC and Brown at Texas who will be getting $3 mil a year for the next ten years. That's $30 million guaranteed. In the pros you don't know if you are going to be there from one year to the next. regarding the cost of living he said that most college towns have lower cost of living than the NFL cities. $1.5 million may go as far in Lincoln or Ann Arbor as $3 million does in New York or Los Angeles.

Doug Gottlieb then phoned in and specifically mentioned Coach Callahan and said he is more likely to keep his job with an average performance in Lincoln where in the pros if you have one sub-par season you're gone.

One interesting sub-topic was about assistants where both agreed it is better to be an assistant in the pros than in college. The main reason is the pro assistants are guaranteed a pension even if they are fired. There are very few college assistants with guaranteed contracts and they are dependant on the career of the head coach.

They players quit on Callahan which is correct. I totally agree with that. As a matter of fact they stated they "refused to play for him". It was a revolt. I think BC is very happy hear. I don't know if he will be happy forever her though. And Gotlieb made my fear...he would keep his job if he is average. Also, the point was made that an assistance job in the NFL is better than College...BUT if you want to be an NFL coach then it is better to be a college head coach than an NFL assistant.

BC isn't leaving on his own anytime soon, but I think he will coach elsewhere. He is still young and it might be college elsewhere.
