Question on Bo and Turner Together

Three-Star Recruit
I like the concept that has been mentioned many times on this board, but keep wondering about the friction that may occur. Everyone has talked about returning to the tradition and that is clearly represented in Gill and his link to the program. I don't think that is so much represented by Pelini even though he did coach at the school.

The question that I keep pondering is how Pelini would view and work with Gill? Pelini is going to look at the situation and see his OC was a player for the AD, the AD was in your OC's wedding, and, according to the news reports, been having constant phone conversations with the AD while the Buffalo head coach. Would that situation cause problems between the two or an unhealthy environment? So, while I like the concept of Pelini as Head Coach and Gill as OC, I feel this could create more problems than it would solve.

Don't think Turner Gill would step down to take an OC at Nebraska when he's already a headcoach what would be the point? He looks like he's very happy where he is and no matter how bad a team is it's still better being a head coach there then an Asst somewhere else. If that was'nt the case no one would take the Baylors or Iowa St jobs of the world.

I will throw myself onto a sword, in public, if TG comes back to Lincoln to be a coordinator. The guy is a head coach, and using the past success at Buffalo as a measuring stick, a very successful one. He will be considered for HC jobs at bigger programs soon (now at NU). Why would he consider going backward, career-wise. That would be moronic. If anyone at NU has the gall to even suggest this, they will be getting a FedEx package from upstate NY with one of those foam #1 fingers moved over one digit. Ridiculous idea! :bang

What is so moronic about a guy leaving a HC position at a lower tier school after showing minimal success to take a job at his alma matter, where he succeeded as a student-athlete and spent years and years of his life helping to create and build-upon the traditions at that school. I honestly believe Turner never truly wanted to leave but the atmosphere generated by Pedey gave Gill no other alternative as he couldn't stand to see what he helped build be destroyed. And now he has the chance to return no matter the fact it could be as an OC (which could still be considered a promotion considering he'd be OC for Nebraska).

I agree with this sentiment. I'm sure TG would like to be at Nebraska, the question is whether OC and assistant HC would be enough for him. My guess is maybe, but I'm not sure. I certainly wouldn't hold it against him if he turned down the opportunity to be the OC under Pelini, or someone else.

As for the original question of whether TG's relationship with TO would be a problem, I'm sure it wouldn't, if for not other reason than that TO's title as the word "Interim" in front of it. He has said all along he doesn't want it to be a permanent position. For all we know, he will step down as soon as a new head coach is chosen. I certainly hope not, and I'm hoping that he reconsiders and decides to become the permanent AD, but who knows...

Gotta agree there. I think that Gill is on the fast track in the coaching world . . . it didn't take very long for him to get a HC position, and I have to believe that he would never, ever take a step backword. Having said that, I hope that isn't an issue, because he might make a pretty darned decent HC at Nebraska. I'd give him the edge over Pellini because (1) he's already been a head coach at a program, (2) he has shown the ability to be a fine recruiter, and (3) he's a classy dude. Pellini hasn't proven any of those yet, although he might be fine as well. He's more of an unknown, though.

I thought about exactly the same thing just puts more pressure on the HC if he knows his successor is the OC most likely. Unless Bo sees this as a stepping stone to the NFL and he'd be gone in 3-4 years so in that case why would he care? I think the two together would be a brilliant combination. Seemed to work well together in 2003?

An OC job at Nebraska >>>> the HC job at Buffalo.

Now, having said that, I don't think Turner would come here to be the OC unless it was with the promise that he'd be the next HC, kind of the way John Cook left Wisconsin to be an "assistant" at Nebraska, then took over for Pettit.

Different strokes for different folks. Some coaches prefer being a HC at a crappy school. Others might prefer being the assistant HC at a traditionally good school, especially if they played there. We see examples of that all the time.
