I've read a few posts on various threads that we will never be what we once were. I think we can get back there quickly because:
1) Tradition
2) Fervent fans
3) Facility
4) Limited scholarships
5) Limited roster size
Think about the last two. There are plenty of talented players who can no longer be stockpiled. I think this is the major reason why we see so many real good programs at smaller schools. Heck, North Dakota St. beat K-St. at K-St last year. That wasn't an anomaly, they would have beaten us, too. We see these supposed stunners happening much more frequently than 20 years ago when the top 10 changed little from year to year. In the 70s and 80s who were the top teams in the Big 8? Nebraska and Oklahoma. The Big 10 - Michigan and Ohio St.. The Pac 10 - USC and UCLA, Bama for years in the SEC and Texas for years in the SWC.
Now we have power programs who don't want to play the Northern Illinois', Northern Iowas, Utahs, Fresno Sts, McNeese Sts. etc. We see Baylor and the Oregons, the Mississippis, the Texas Techs, the Kansas sts, and even Kansas'.
It's a much more level field which makes it tougher to hang onto a dynasty; but, conversely makes a rebuilding process much easier.
Three years under the right coach and we're back. Should be two, we wasted this year as cause was more than sufficient to ditch this slop last year. “If they want to fire me, go ahead.” "F**king fair weather fans."
