Recruiting is not an exact science

Recruiting is not an exact Science

It began small, and ended with a bang. In less then 2 months, Bill Callahan will begin his second season as head coach of one of the finest institutions in college football. Bill Callhan came to Nebraska, with the chance to resurrect the big red Empire and bring it back to its glory days. With limited amount of time to work with and few resources,he managed to scrap and salvage together a recruiting class from the prior regime that gave us a glimpse of what might be expected. The following class ended up being one of the best recruiting classes in the history of the program and a top 5 class.

Looking at the program a year ago, it had disaster written all over it, but Billy knew it was never going to be an easy task. The mention of a passing game was enough to raise eyebrows from fans and players alike "we are going to do what again with the ball?". It is never an easy task changing the mindset of a nation that had been used to doing things a certain way.

Sometimes you take the good with the bad and you make it work. Easier said then done is what this staff figured out.by the end of the season. No worries, help was on the way.In the form of super charged mutant humans and speedy monsters, something bagan to emerge. The greatest joy in the world to any kid is watching several million dominos falling one after the other to form a beautiful masterpiece. This is exactly what Billy did last season. We as fans have become the children. Billy setup a domino show for us and it began with the first piece (Harrison Beck) and ended with a masterpiece recruiting class. Once that first piece was in place, the domino effect took place. Domino after domino, recruit after recruit, this coaching staff managed to keep us entertained in a period of time we never really did pay much attention to, and is managing to paint it's second masterpiece again with 5 commitments so far in the 2006 recruiting class.

What is it about this coaching staff that drives kids to want to play for this group of coaches? Phillip Dillard might give us some insight into that:

Coach blake welcomed me with open arms. I sat down in his office and my eyes immediately went to the HUGE ring on his hand. It was a Super Bowl ring! When he first started talking to me I think he noticed that I was looking at his ring so he asked me if I like it. I said no I don't like it, I love it! He mentioned to me that he had another one at home. That was impressive! I started thinking, I wish I had one!"

So is it the NFL experience that drives recruits to want to play for Nebraska? Surely their has to be more to it then that. Maybe Craig Roark can answer that

"Coach Callahan treats you like a son.You know he will take care of you during those 4 years.Being comfortable around the coaches is the main reason i decided to come to Nebraska, and i think coach Callahan and the rest of the staff are upfront and honest with you about everything. They take the time to sit down and explain everything for you. With them, it's not just about football, but it's everything. They really care about you"

We can all conceed that tradition is an important factor in recruiting, as well as top notch training facilities. Most importantly, great coaching and recruits surrounding themselves with other great talent is what this coaching staff has promised them. Gone are the days of lazy attitudes and missed practices.Gone are the days of slow reaction time players. All of that is now replaced by speed, speed, and more speed. We are recruiting new types of athletes that we once dreamed about. We are recruiting athletes that Nebraska fans "aww'd" and ohh'd" about when it came to the opposition. We are recruiting players who in past years, would never have even considered Nebraska in its top 3, let alone top 10.

You can bet on it that the coaching staff is sitting around a table as we speak, all smiles from cheek to cheek. The biggest thing that this coaching staff is pleased about is the attitude, charachter and quality of this group of young men coming in. Some do not realize how important this recruiting class is yet, but it is very important for the future of Nebraska football. It is the stepping stone to that coveted trophy that all 119 Div-A programs dream about. Even though recruiting remains an inexact science, it's going to take a a while for this group of new faces to mesh well together like a well oiled machine

I had the pleasure of meeting Coach John Blake at a Big Red Breakfest last season and he not only looks at you in the eyes and shows you respect, but he listens to the conversation. When speaking to him, i wanted to know exactly how he approached recruits and is able to convince them into coming here. Little did i know back then that i was speaking to a monster recruiter. He said that selling Nebraska is easy. He walks into a recruits house, sells the program to the recruit, but in particular to the mother. He lets the recruits family know that Academics is the most important thing to this coaching staff and the University. He lets the recruits and his mom specifically know that he, the coaches and god will take care of him during his college years. All this before he even talks about the tradition at Nebraska, All-Americans, and the numerous NFL experience this coaching staff has to offer.

College football magazines are out with predictions already and recruiting analyst have begun to put together their list of favorite players this season to watch. Some might be worried about the amount of recruits we have heading into July, but i say "do not worry, all will be good in the land of red". Last year, Nebraska managed to sign 4 players this early in the season, one of them was a rivals 100 member at the time (Harrison Beck). This class already has its Rivals 100 player in Josh Freeman, plus 4 other quality recruits who should get good rankings from recruiting analyst. Will this recruiting class be even better then last year? That remains to be seen, but all signs already point to yes. Nebraska leads the nation in recruits visits so far at 16 and has other top notch blue chippers buzzing about visiting Lincoln. Last year Nebraska had only 10 visits scheduled before camp practice began, so we are well over the quota at this point. There's also news about 2 other 4 star prospects visiting Lincoln during its second game which would push the total to 18 visits. We may have lost several key battles for certain recruits, but all is fair in recruiting. You can't expect to win them all. In the meantime, just sit back, relax and open a cold beer, because it's going to be another exciting recruiting class to follow

Well written Nameless, thanks for the breakdown!

I think the key with our new staff is simply the pure ENERGY they bring to the recruiting scene. It's clear that they simply WILL NOT BE OUTWORKED. Period. And they are sending that message to the other coaches and highschool athletes throughout the nation - and that message is sinking in and becoming our reputation, which Im sure can be somewhat intimidating to other staffs, and very impressive to young athletes.

Lincoln, Nebraska is now one of *the* places to at least visit if you're serious about becoming a premier CF player. That is HUGE. And can all be attributed to the traits that sets our staff above the others - Big Red-Bull energy, and a strong disdain towards being outworked. 2 characteristics Im sure fellow Nebraskans can very much identify with and admire.

:dis

In regards to the first paragraph, why dont we ask Pilkington, Birkel, Washington, Bullocks, Dailey, Horne, etc. if they were treated like the coaches sons. :sarcasm

The second paragraph, I dont get at all. Youre telling me that NU won 5 NCs with missed practices and lazy attitudes? Youre telling me that NU won 5 NCs, and yet top recruits wouldnt even consider NU?? If that is true, then how in the hell did they do it? :WTH I keep hearing this garbage that "These guys never even considered NU before, but they do now" Well guess what, alot of them still dont consider NU. It just seems as if instead of this staff having a real recruiting plan, they just pick up Rivals and Scouts lists, and offer all of these guys schollys, kind of how ND did in the Holtz era. Isnt what we have been hearing the last couple of years, that this staff has over 100 offers out there?? If that is true, then they really arent accessing any talent, just shooting at everything that walks in hopes of getting a couple of commits. As far as speed, speed, speed, NU used to get all of their db's and rb's that ran 4.5 or faster, wr's that were 4.6 or faster, qb's, te's, lb's and re's ran 4.5-4.7, dt's that ran 4.8-4.9, and OL's that were 4.9-5.0, not any of these 210 lb, 4.7 wr's that are now being recruited, not Harvey, the 230 re that runs a 5.2, or the Piccou cousins that run 5+, or the slugs they have at the qb position.

It sounds like billy c's nephew wrote this diatribe.

What is their to NOT get? Let me break it down a little further, how many national championships did Solich win? That help? I'm pretty sure that's what he was eluding to. Correct me if I am wrong, Nameless.

Nice stretch with the Horne remark. Sorry geting kicked off the team after a SECOND arrest is right in my eyes. That has nothing to do with treating a kid like your son. How many chances did Dailey get? Only a "coaches son" would get that many chances to screw up and never see the bench.

Last I checked, he won 3 as the Assistant Head Coach, which is more than this entire staff has won combined.

Also, when HC, FS went to a bowl game EVERY year, which the current regime will never be able to say.

Dude, you have to expect this from him by now. Sweeping generalizations with opinions stated as truth sprinkled in.

Welcome, Nameless Husker, to the black hole that is formerfan. Reason cannot reach into this empty pitt of despair, facts do not stir the unmoving muck that forms the substance of this space, and the fact that Rodney Picou ran a 4.9 means nothing in.... The formerfan zone. Cue crappy music.

John Blake has 2 super bowl rings as an assistant and you do your darndest to take that from him and knock him down and what the other assistants have done and you bring up what Solich did as an ASSISTANT? You gotta be joking. I'll give you a mulligan if you wanna take back what you just said, due to the absurdity of the statement. :)

Like I have said numerous times, blake was hired by Johnson after the Cowboys won their first SB, so its not as if blake was the architect of the great Cowboy dynasty of the 90s. He was a gravy-train who fell into the right job, at the right time. Are you gonna give him credit for turning Charles Haley into a Pro-Bowl DE, just because the two were both on the Cowboys at the same time, even though Haley was a PBer with the 49ers???? How did blake do at OU??

BTW, FS was part of the Husker program when it was going through the 9/10 win seasons, with losses to OU and in the bowl games. He was one of the building blocks that helped NU become the dominate program of the 90's, per Tom Osborne. The same cant be said about blake.

Yeah, I remeber now. It was Frank that came up with the option offense, not Osborne ripping it off from Oklahoma, and it was Frank that switched to the 4-3 defense, and it was Frank that called the plays, and it was Frank that recruited Turner Gill, Mike Rozier, Irving Fryar, Tommie Frazier, Lawrence Phillips, Ahman Green, Eric Crouch, and the rest of the Husker greats. No wait. Never mind, Frank didnt do any of these things. He told the running backs, ok, now you run this far away from the quarterback and wait to see if he pitches it.... Easiest position to coach. You dont have to be a genius to play running back, just look at Frank himself.

Facts??? You'd better check what your precious rivals100 lists as Rodney Picou's 40 time: 5.19.

And Scout has him listed at a 5.40

Oh well, just another episode of you shooting your mouth off, and me proving you wrong. Again.

The more things change....

Well, you had your chance at a mulligan. That was the dumbest piece of garbage I have ever read. You can't say one guy was a good assistant because he has the hardware and another assistant just rode the gravy train and he sucks. The NFL is extremely competitive and it is so hard to stay on top. If Blake was a part of 2 Super Bowl winning teams in 3 seasons, I think that solidifies him as, at THE VERY LEAST, a competent assistant. You can't say one coach got the best of his players and the other one was blessed with great players that won despite how terrible he was.

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS!

No matter how badly you want it your way. You about done with your temper tantrum now, cause I think it's nap time. ;)

Actually Ahman Green DID say that FS was one of the reasons why he came to NU.

As far as the other guys, I cant comment on them.

BTW, I WONT be taking your word that rb is the easiest position to coach, as I am sure that your coaching resume is far from spectacular. And the fact that you are regularly the most un-informed, incorrect member of this board.

(sigh) Lets do it again, maybe you can understand it. Both situations are different, they are not the same, so yes, I can have it both ways.

Dallas had all the players in place and won the Super Bowl the year prior to blake being hired. He didnt build the team, his genius as a coach didnt turn these guys into Pro-bowlers overnight, he fell into the right team at the right time. A guy like Nelson Barnes or Craig Bohl fits into this category, also.

FS was here during some good season, but he was here during the "down" seasons of the late 80's/early 90's. He had a huge influence in how the offense was handled. If you get to listen to the HuskerVision tapes of the 98 OB, you can get a little taste of what his role was in play calling and game planning. Dont take it from me, take it from Osborne. I would say that another coach that could be considered as such would be Belichik (sp?) when he was an assistant under Parcells.
