Some interesting stats.

I found these on the OWH website.

Why not go back to Roy Helu, who had two 20-yard runs on the same drive? Helu carried three times Saturday in the red zone for minus-4 yards. The junior I-back gained 173 on 25 other rushes.

 

“Coach's call,” Helu said. “We're here to serve our coaches and play for each other. That's just the call, and we execute the play.”

 

As a team, the Huskers averaged 5.8 yards per play outside the red zone. Inside the 20, the average was 1.4.

 

Watson said it's important to note that Virginia Tech has an especially stingy red-zone defense. The Hokies avoided a blowout loss on Sept. 5 by forcing Alabama to kick four field goals in a neutral-site game.

In Blacksburg, the task grows more difficult.

 

 

I think that says just as much about our poor execution in the red zone as it does the VaTech Defense's execution in the redzone.

Hmmmmm interesting. You just gave me more info to counter any Hawkeye or Irish fan comments about us losing and why VT is better than any opponent that they've faced so far.

 
Wouldn't mind seeing us try more under center speed option when inside the five. Maybe even give Green a package. I'm not talking complex triple option stuff of the nineties, just speed option with a single back.

Until Saturday we were 7 of 8 in the Red Zone. But the problem in the Red Zone becomes GAME WINNING ACUTE when we play tough opponets.

We are good in the Red Zo0ne against cupcakes, but not so muich against our peers.

We need to be able to score in Red Zone against a team like the NFL's Ravens!

We need a heavy packgage or a Willdcat.

There needs to be a solution found and not just :hellloooo :yeah against cupcakes!

damn...holding bama to 4 field goals too? I'd say it definitely was solid red zone d and a lot less poor offensive production

 
Thought the play calling was too conservative in the red zone. Almost like they were to afraid to make a mistake down there. Tough to swallow because just one TD instead of a FG puts the game out of reach.

 
How are we going to have a discussion about the red zone offense without mentioning the two should have been TDs? The first Holt straight up dropped, the second we lost on an iffy call. (Say what you want about the rule book, but I've seen that call go both ways. In the Pac 10 that's a TD!) Had Holt keep his hands on the ball then we aren't even having this discussion.

Take away those two HUGE mistakes, and the absolute mental meltdown late in the 3rd, and there is no room to question the redzone play calling. It all comes down to execution, unfortunately NU didn't get any when they really really needed it.

The two should have been TD's were on the same series. We were in the redzone four other times. I'm not slamming anybody, I just think we could have been more creative.
