Redshirting players...

Since redshirting players has been a big topic of late im wondering if you guys think that not shirting Dennard was a mistake? Or do you think that him playing on special teams and some end of game time was enough? Thoughts?.... :bonez :bonez :bonez :bonez

 
I agree....i mean i think that Dennard can be a great player for us...i just don't kno if he played enough to not shirt...if he would have gotten in on some nickel or dime packages i mite feel different..

 
Kinda like Niles Paul. Oh well, if the kid can contribute and the coaches and the player agree, then let him play. It's a judgement call on behalf of the coaches. Pelini was saved by the fact Meredith and Fisher were hurt and are able to get medicals.

 
sometimes you have to play your best kids. They redshirted a ton a guys who maybe could have helped this year, so you KNOW they are not afraid to redshirt for the future. Which leads me to believe he was ready to help more than not on special teams.

also, they could have felt he will have a HUGE impact on D this year in the secondary and wanted him to be a leader back there especially with the younger guys. now he has seen game speed and will be very valuable this year, God willing.

...one final thing, it gives incoming players a sense that if they are ready and practice the right way, they can play immediatly

No, Niles only got in to one or two offensive plays and a few special teams. Dennard was almost every special team play (at least kickoff) and got some legit "rundown the clock time"

I think that Bo made the right decision, but no one knows for a couple of years, it is all speculation now

 
I wonder if this type of thing will happen with some players who have said they were promised early playing time next year.

For example, Eric Martin talked about how he was told he would be able to compete for PT at linebacker and that he would also be able to step in on special teams right away.

It seems like a waste, perhaps, but it can be a great way to get a player some in-game experience and reward hard work during practice, if they feel like Redshirting would not be in their own best interest.

 
He was probally more ready to play then the others. Keep in mind he can still redshirt in the next 3 years, it's not MANDATORY that you be a freshmen to redshirt.

 
The coaches are saying they can compete for a job. That doesn't mean they're going to play or burn a redshirt. I'm guessing they will get a chance to earn a position. Once they've given it their all the coaches will sit down to discuss what is best for the player and for the team.

Nah, Niles was like Meno. Both were gonna get RS but begged the coaches endlessly until they got to play. Both were begging daily to get snaps and both did, even for a limited amount. Both of them wasted a year because of their own wishes.

Dennard -- you are dang right I wished that guy had taken a RS. He got, what, like 5 KRs on the year and played some ST coverage? That's not worth it to waste a year of eligibility on a guy that has talent like Dennard does. Guy should have easily been playing over Thorell if he wasn't gonna take the RS. He and Prince probably have the best mix of raw talent and athleticism of anyone on our roster.

 
on the other hand, what happens if dennard doesnt spring paul into the end zone with his blocks on that kick return against SJSU?

 
If the kid works hard in practice and has earned time on the field. Then by all means, let him on the field if he wants and is going to make the team better.
