Rhule finally feels like the "right coach" for Nebraska

Ganz committed to Callahan. Solich's top QB targets were Allen Evridge and D.T. McDowell. LOL oh boy :[

It is fair to say, as has been already, that Osborne's assistants were reaching a point where they struggled to keep up on the recruiting trail due to age. Not a knock, just how it goes. The problem though, is that Solich was not a great closer, opting to pull out a scrapbook of the glory days instead of selling the future of the program and his "vision".
To be fair, Carl Crawford was suppose to be the follow-up to Crouch after 2001 had he played football and not left for the MLB. My guess on revisionist history would be that he would have likely been a crazy good follow-up to a Heisman winning QB. Then does 2002 not look so bad and we don't have this conversation at all about recruiting and a 7-7 season.

So all of the above posts bring up one of the big time "Nebraska 'What ifs". What if Tom didn't have his way and the AD hired the new coach to replace him in 97? Could it have been Bob Stoops? Good chance. Good chance our whole coaching 25 year coach carousal doesn't happen. As @BigRedBuster notes above, Tom required Frank to keep the old staff. The recruiting dropped off. A younger Bob Stoops might have kept the recruiting pipeline full. Tom should have stepped away and let the AD be the AD.

The other big "What If" that I wonder about - If Tom had won the 3 NC that were in the bag for him that he lost (2 stolen by refs: PSU 1982, FSU 2003, and 1 if he had just kicked the d*$M extra point in '83) would he be considered GOAT with Saben chasing him? If he had won NC in 82 and 83, I suspect he would have won more in the 1980s because of the exposure to better recruiting a NC gives a school. Nebraska won the 1990s and we could have won the 1980s and an argument could be made that we won the 1970s wt 2 NC and with the 71 team being top 3 or 4th all time per some analysts.
Here's a "what if". If TO had won those NCs in the 80s, would he have made the changes he made in the early 90s on defense that propelled the team those NCs?

Yeah it made no sense.

"You need to make these changes for the team to improve".

*Makes the changes and the team improves*

"You're fired anyway".

*Goes on to have hall of fame coaching career*

Frank had a drinking and co-ed problem that was always threatening to become a PR disaster. That's in the mix, too.

For now he seems to be the guy. I am drinking the Rhule Aid. 6-6 season, I might change my tune. 8-4 or better, I think we are doing well. I know 8-4 sounds like crap given the schedule, but the B1G is pretty tough.

At 8-4, I think many would reserve judgement until after the bowl game. 9-4 with a bowl game win and most would feel pretty good. 8-5 with a bowl game loss wouldn't move the needle for most. A one game improvement with a 2nd year 5 star QB, the OC you have been clamoring for, and an easier schedule would not be acceptable to most. I really think we should win 9+ games this year. I also thought that about Adrian Martinez's second year... This just feels different.

As someone said earlier, the judgement on the bowl game, win or lose, all depends on how that plays out and who we play. If we play a game like last year and lose, I can see some disgruntlement. But, if we get put against a really good team and there aren't a lot of players holding out and not playing, then a close loss wouldn't necessarily be the red flag your indicating here.

Frank was a terrible OC but that's what Tom did so that's what Frank did. If he would have just been the HC and got a legit OC, maybe things would have been different. I could literally sit (stand) in the stands and correctly predict a good portion of what play was about to be run based on the formation we lined up in.

So true. I know we have some Jammal Lord fans here but that was a really hard offense to watch.

There was ZERO plan in place.

In both cases I think the administration and fans still assumed Nebraska was a plum job and we could snag a marquee coach for under market value. We may never know how much outreach was done prior to the firings, but once the job was open all those wish list guys turned NU down. Callahan should have been the lesson, but I think they made the same mistake after the Pelini firing.

Some folks think the Mike Riley hire was strictly about getting a nice guy in the role, but they initially reached out to Brett Bielema so that may not have been true.
