Rhule finally feels like the "right coach" for Nebraska

I've heard that rumor before. The first few times it was about Bohl.
But that was a decades old thing about Frank. It wasn't new information in whatever year he was hired as HC. I think his side peace was a very long term relationship- 30 years comes to mind. And a nurse. Or maybe she was 30 years old. My memory is fading. lol.

And Devaney was a drinker and all of his players/coaches/opposing coaches were his drinking buddies. When did it stop being cool to toss back a fifth back on game day?

Probably about the same time fans stopped wearing suits and pencil skirts to games. lol.

Some folks think the Mike Riley hire was strictly about getting a nice guy in the role, but they initially reached out to Brett Bielema so that may not have been true.
Not sure I would choose Bielema over the rough years - can't stand that dude but he is a good coach. I guess if he came here and we won a lot, I could have probably gotten over it.

Well Solich pre-dated Bohl by a good decade or two. I was alive at the time and it was pretty common knowledge, as Solich was known to show up at student parties looking to join in the fun. It's true no one minded as much back then, but no one denied it either. I was also alive when Bob Devaney was too drunk to back his Cadillac out of our street one winter night and I had to do it for him.

I also went to high school with Craig Bohl. I wouldn't be shocked if the rumors were true, but who knows? My guess is that college football coaches have long enjoyed access to young women and the drinking shouldn't shock anybody. But Frank did get a DUI shortly after arriving at Ohio, and by 2003 character clauses had become an issue. Did anyone think Carl Pelini was railroaded, or do you believe the stories about doing coke and banging donor wives? I think Solich was something like that.

Frank Solich and Bobby Petrino were cut from the same mold.

I think we can leave morality out of any coaching discussion prior to 2010, when camera phones and social media came into play.

TO was the ultimate mob boss of a HC. His ability to rationalize poor player behavior while starting the Teammates program is very conflicting. For me anyway. But I bet we all had some dirt before our invisible electronic footprints became visible.

It's remarkably easy to justify your own actions when the story you're telling yourself is that you're the hero/mentor/sage/savior

In both cases I think the administration and fans still assumed Nebraska was a plum job and we could snag a marquee coach for under market value. We may never know how much outreach was done prior to the firings, but once the job was open all those wish list guys turned NU down. Callahan should have been the lesson, but I think they made the same mistake after the Pelini firing.

Was Brett at Arkansas at that time?

Yeah. I guess the thinking was that Beilema would see Nebraska as a step up from Arkansas. Presumably they had a salary in mind.

Interesting, too, because post-Solich I believe the ADs first choice was Houston Nutt, also coaching Arkansas at the time. A lot of us weren't that impressed with Nutt and a bit surprised he wasn't interested in what we considered an obvious promotion to Nebraska.

Bret would have been in interesting fit at NU.

He has done pretty well at most places so I would think he would do well at NU.

You mean he is 57, super rich, happy and retired? Yeah, what a loser. The guy got 4 million in one lump sum to leave LSU.

He clearly has no interest in coaching right now. He could be on the Kentucky staff today if he wanted a job there.

And he took YSU to the title game.

I mean, you could be right and maybe no one wants him or he could just be happy living his life.
True, he made a ton of money to not coach football. But concerning the bolded; if the reason he's not coaching right now, at 57, is because he doesn't want to then I am glad he's not our coach. That would tell me he doesn't have the fire needed.

Yes, but Lord was fairly low on the list of issues on that offense. If he had better players around him, people's memory of his time here would be very different.

I think a lot of fans remember Jamal Lord pretty well. In a program built on running quarterbacks he was one of the best. But that may have been part of the problem. Lord was allowed to call his own number, and he kept the ball a lot more than Eric Crouch. He may have even made more yardage on broken plays than designed plays. It was more of a one-dimensional offense than Osborne's power option playbook, and not very pretty to watch.

I was surprised how much talent was on that 7-7 team -- more NFL bound players than we've had in years. A lot of freshman who were about to get better.

An underrated part of the Solich discussion is how he turned the talent TO has already recruited into a mediocre team.
