Rhule to Penn State?

The athletic department has money coming out of they eyeballs from B1G TV deals. They can only use a set amount of that in rev share, they can't pay any NIL. So an extra $1M/year for Rhule doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

If you want to lock down a coach, this is the year to do it. We are signaling stability with recruits/transfers when there are so many other big programs in chaos.

And it if doesn't work out, in 2-3 years we pay another buyout and start over. That's the way of college football.
This is the key. Schools that lock down a head coach could greatly benefit from stability for what will be the wildest coaching circus this offseason. A good finish to the rest of this year and we may pull some high level transfers/recruits simply due to being a known commodity. A transfer with one year of eligibility left might come here if he knows his role and can clearly understand how he would be used. Harder to do so at a school like North Carolina this past year where the picture was less clear under a new coaching staff and a mix matched group of coaches and players.

Though I think Rhule would be the first choice for the AD at Penn State, their boosters and fans would likely be disappointed, given their current expectations. His limited resume does not indicate that he could match or exceed their expectations so I think he'll only get hired there if they strike out on their top 3-5 options.

I reckon that makes enough sense for me then

As it pertains to the extension, I’m indifferent either way

So hypothetically, if they got money burning a hole in their pockets that can’t be used towards NIL, what’s to stop Rhule from asking for an extra 5 mil per contract year, then he donates that straight into the NIL hat? Let’s make it 10 mil per year?

"Coaches cannot donate their salary directly to NIL programs because of NCAA rules, but some have contributed money to their school's athletic foundation or athletic department, which may then use the funds for various needs including supporting NIL operations. These contributions are typically made to the university's athletic department or a 501(c)3 organization, not the third-party NIL collective."

So no, but yes? Just through different conveyance?

I really don’t think it’s an either/or thing with Rhule’s salary and paying players. The house settlement has a max we can contribute directly through the school, and any overages will come through 1890.

I’m glad that the Penn st chatter is behind us. I just hope he doesn’t go and crap the bed now against USC.. or it’s going to make us all feel a type of way. Not necessarily saying we should or will win.. but if we see a Minnesota type of performance imma be real pissed.

Good - glad to get the tension out of the room so to speak. Hopefully we play less tight on Sat and find a way to win out.
additional - I hope with this extension, Rhule takes the time to evaluate and replace some assistant coaches and upgrade those spots.

Good timing to get this done with a big recruiting weekend coming up against USC. Let's put this thing to rest now and move on with our lives.

I don’t wanna be that guy but this does not mean that he won’t leave.
Sure he still has a buyout and another team could pay that, but I don’t think you agree to a public extension if you’re still leaving the Penn State door open this year. You’d burn a lot of bridges. You’d just continue the basic denial at press conferences and then have a “change of heart” in December. I really don’t think he’s leaving in 2025
