Riley disappointed in special teams shortcomings

Assistant Coach
This is kind of a hot button issue, especially since most of us are new to the idea of having a fulltime ST coordinator -- me included.

I'm on board with it, though. But when the unit doesn't perform, the scrutiny will and should follow. I love that there is a focus, intention, and attention given to special teams. I'm a little more "wait and see" on whether all of that is going to end up productive.

Probably the biggest concern so far is the KR return unit. Whether that's the blockers or Stevenson, I don't know. Have to see much better than we have so far. A lot of the rest of ST play is actually quite solid, although Riley does spotlight the downturn in punt coverage last week.

Foltz is really hard on himself in that area as well, which I think just reflects the kind of guy Foltz is. I love that, but with respect to his comments, I think he's too harsh. It looked to me less like he outkicked his coverage, and more like his coverage lost track of the ball. Those guys should be a little steamed for blowing those opportunities, just as Foltz is for not doing something to get a better result. That's how we all get better

I'm sure the feeling is mutual.
Actually, I'm sure it's not. There's zero indication whatsoever that the team isn't in this together.

If this fantasy of expert players disappointed in clueless coaches is somehow reality that's a huge indictment -- on those players. There's no reason to think that is true of these Nebraska players.
