Riley > Mora

I think people are putting more weight into this game than really should even be there. UCLA had a pretty disappointing end to their season. They make a bowl only to be congratulated by facing a five win team that for all intensive purposes shouldn't even have been bowl eligible. I'm guessing it was a pretty tall task trying to get that team motivated for that game. By being paired up with us, it was more of a cube stomping than when we were rematched against Washington a while back.

you know that is not the phrase, right?
He got it right except for misspelling porpoises. They should never be bowl eligible.

Mora seems like a pretty good coach, honestly. I don't think Bruins fans have much to hang their heads about. If Riley has a anything noteworthy on Mora, that goes back in large part to his Oregon State record -- which we all (should) know has quite a few bright spots. Not for nothing does some guy who coached a lot of non-MNC contending Oregon State teams have as well regarded a name as Mike Riley does.

That doesn't mean he'll be Nebraska's Nick Saban or even its Mark Dantonio, but nothing guarantees either of those things, and it's always nice to have a few feathers in the cap. Knocking off the likes of USC is another one of those.

I remember when Dantonio was just some guy with a few "daring trick play upset" feathers in his own cap, but now look where he's gotten that MSU program. It's hard for a program to find that kind of success, but usually it doesn't come completely out of nowhere.

Riley beat a top ten team this year. And beat UCLA. Pelini didn't do either of those things in his seven years. Then again, Pelini never lost seven games either. OTOH, yearly blowouts.

Nebraska beat #6 Missouri at home in 2010, for clarification.

Purdue was a blowout. Final score does not matter, anybody who knows football knows that game was a blowout.
Final score is all that matters concerning blowouts. I know, Purdue is a loss that we'd all like to forget. Kinda like Osborne's loss to Iowa State in '92.

That's just what fans do, though. Bowl games set the narrative for the off-season. A win is certainly better than a loss, and UCLA was almost a touchdown favorite over Nebraska.

There could have been some motivation issues there for UCLA, but I think it's fair to say some of the Nebraska players probably didn't feel a lot of motivation either knowing this season didn't go the way they wanted it to. There were also reports of some players clearing out their lockers immediately following the Iowa game, though I've never seen that confirmed anywhere.

The long and short of it I don't think people should take away much. A good win over a decent program, but I'm still very much in a "I'll believe it when I see it" mentality with this team. One game has not alleviated my concerns or worries for 2016.

Did he do that AND beat UCLA in the same year?

Well, no, but the way NUance wrote it he made it seem like he was considering them exclusive of one another.

Ha ha! Yeah, I had forgotten that Mizzou was ranked so high when we kicked them to the curb. Okay, Pelini did beat one top ten team. (And it was an awesome win! Thank you, Roy Helu. LINK)
