Maybe I'm beating a dead horse, but I think it would make more sense to figure out what the requirements are THEN decide what teams fit the best, instead of trying to figure out why some teams are'nt rivals. Suggestions?

I think it's different for everybody. I guess a rival to me is the one team I want to beat the most everytime we play them. To me it's KSU, or CU. No they don't hold a candle to our tradition, and I know that we're 70-6 against them or whatever so on that level no they're not a rival. But to me a rival is the one team you absolutly can't stand to lose to every year. That means it can change. In the late 80's and early 90's I hated CU with a passion(still do). But after kicking there butts for 5 or 6 straight years the hatred started to taper
off a little. Right know we are in the same situation with KSU. After we beat them for 3 or 4 more years in a row the hatred will problably taper with them too.
